This is just an idea that popped into my head a while back. I own nothing.
Mr. Elroy and his wife were the proud parents of two children, Jack and Annie. They were happy with them, but worried over the constant friction between the two for a long time. Jack was serious, realistic, and destined to become a scientist. Annie was imaginative, and prone to fits of daze, daydreaming in school about Knights, horses, and any number of fantastical creatures. The Elroys thought that she would be a writer when she grew up. Of course, it seemed odd when Jack came home with a sprained ankle, and with Annie chattering about pterodactyls. Jack never ran in the woods, and Annie rarely spoke in such a scientific manner. From that point, life began to change, at first barely noticeably to the adults. The quarrels between the twosome became less intense, and to a point, they relied on each other. They constantly ran off into the woods, and almost always came back injured. After a time, they were forbidden to leave the house without telling their parents where they were going. They ran off any way.
Jack, who hated fantasy, began to tell stories. Annie reported facts. They acted oddly mature. After a few months, the two of them began to refuse to talk to anyone else, almost. It was worrying. They hired a physiologist, terrified that their children were hurting themselves. Their questions remained unanswered. Several times, they were caught reading medical books. When the children went off to college, Jack could rattle off any myth you asked about, and Annie knew so many facts that she outpaced the professors, and was called a genius. They both were driven; they were going to change the world. At twenty-two though, they went off into the woods, and didn't return.
Skeletons were found in the area years later, dated to be about 5,000 years old. Someone ran them through a DNA tester, to see what they looked like. The results were shocking. A grown woman and man, about twenty-three, one blonde, and the other brown haired, respectively. Someone posted the image on the computer, and the Elroy couple found it. The two could swear that they were their lost children, and someone heard that. They were tested for resemblance, even though it was nearly impossible that they were related in any way. When the results came in, the skeletons showed an exact match to the two. The parents were horrified as they realized that their children had gone back in time, and did something they'd sworn they would never do. They looked inside their children's journals, and found...everything. It was stunning. It took them weeks to accept what Jack and Annie had been doing. The two were proud, but angry, and with good reason. But time passed, and the two of them died. The journals were found, disregarded as a work of fiction. Published, they gained popularity with many children, in a series called The Magic Tree House series. Years later, research lead to the discovery of timetravel, but no one ever learned the truth. The stories had been set in a modern day place, and published under the name of a separate author, creativity tributed to the journals. So the Travelers came to be known throughout the world, and changed the lives of many children.
