Bring May Flowers
"It's almost May," complained Tony to his co-workers.
"Yeah, so?" McGee didn't look up from the report he was typing.
"So? Is that all you can say, McGee."
"Tony, it's just another month."
"No, it isn't just another month. It is the month that we should all fear above all others. It is the month that we should hide in doomsday shelters and not leave until it's June first. It's the month that something indescribably bad going to happen to one or more us in our makeshift little family." At this point both stopped what they were doing. Gibbs perked up almost unnoticed the moment Tony said May.
"What are you talking about, Tony?" asked Ziva.
"You guys are supposed to be élite investigators. I'm sure you have noticed the pattern that something always happens in May."
"I think you are exaggerating a little Tony." McGee didn't notice that he sounded every bit in denial.
"No, think about... last year the building was blown up while we still inside it."
"Well..."
"The year before that was the thing with the P2P Killer being on the loose."
"And Mike Franks was killed," added Ziva.
"That doesn't mean anything."
"The year before that... well I don't think we have to go into detail with that." No one wanted to mention Gibbs and Mexico in the same sentence, especially not Tony.
"And four years ago was the question of whether Ziva was a traitor or not."
"We didn't end up in Somalia until September."
"But we wouldn't have needed to go to Somalia if it weren't for what happened in May."
"I don't think I have to mention that it was May when Vance thought it was a good idea to separate the team and exile me to a ship." Jenny's death was slightly taboo when Gibbs was around. The fact that it was May when it happened wasn't enough of an excuse to mention it.
"Wasn't it May when that whole mess with the Frog came to a head?"
"I really loved that car," said Tony in a roundabout way of confirming that Gibbs was right.
"Gibbs' Mexican sabbatical began in May," added Ziva after a pause... mostly because Tony wasn't brave enough to say the word sabbatical in front of Gibbs again.
"Ari and Kate..."
"Ari caused trouble for Kate in May twice."
"Okay, you made your point. May is a very bad month," McGee finally agreed.
"Do you think Vance will let us have the month off, Boss?" asked Tony.
"Nope."
Gibbs couldn't help but remember that it had been May when he killed Pedro Hernandez. He really hoped that he hadn't cursed them all by his actions.
