Unrequited Love

Disclaimer: I do not own Harvest Moon.

A/N: This is something that I wrote for Yoshigali on Gaia. This actually happened to her and I wanted to make a fanfiction out of it, and she said go on ahead. So here's to you, Yoshigali!

Jane didn't know why it happened. She didn't think that he'd like her. At least, not that way. She was just being friendly to him, like she was to everybody else. She was in love with Ray, not . . . .

She looked back into her hands at the broach that he got for her. She felt so bad. He gave her this beautiful present, and she didn't even consider going out with him. Well, she wasn't actually going for Ray either, but when he gave her that fishing pole, he was just so sweet. She blushed at the memory.

Poor Joe. He was such a nice young man. Always friendly and cheerful, kind to everybody he met. She wiped her tears from her face, feeling so sorry for him. He could have went for anyone in the village, so why her? She thought back to earlier that morning.

There was a knock at the door. Jane unaware of who it was walked over and opened it, seeing that it was Joe, looking happier than ever, but also a little shy.

"Yo!" he said with a bit of song to his greeting.

Jane waved cheerfully, happy to see her friend. "Hi! How are you doing?"

Joe began to blush. "I, uh . . . had this made. It's a present . . . for you." He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a broach and handed it to Jane, much to her surprise and shock.

Joe looked down and rubbed the back of his neck, blushing some more. "Lately . . . you're all that I think about, and my head is in the clouds . . . I think that I like you."

Jane instantly began to freak out inside her head. Why? Why did he have to like her? Why couldn't he have liked somebody else?

"Well, see ya!" he said, sounding happy. He then ran down the street waving goodbye.

And now she was standing in the cold, fall air, her feet frozen to the ground. Why did he have to love her? Why does she have to break his heart? She was going to ask Ray to marry her soon, leaving the poor carpenter crushed. But he was young, he'd fall in love again. But still . . . she felt so guilty.

She finally went inside the house and put the broach in the far back of the dresser. She'd never wear it, but she just didn't have the heart to throw it away.

There was another knock at the door. Jane slowly reached for the knob with shaking fingers, hoping that it wasn't Joe again.

She opened the door and sighed. It was Katie.

"Hi!" Katie said. "Is Joe here? I wanted to ask him something."

Jane shook her head. "No. He left a while ago. Why?"

Katie blushed; an unusual thing for her to do. "No reason, really."

Jane took a double take of Katie's face. Blushing? Did she like . . . "He might be over at the Workshop or at the lake."

"Thank you!" Katie said happily, running off.

Jane smiled a little. Maybe, just maybe, things will be alright.
