"Dallas?" The five-year-old stood in the doorway, watching her brother throw things into a bag. He didn't look at her, and spat, "What, Delanie?" The little girl flinched, noticeably, and the ten-year-old walked over and stood in front of her, looking down at her. "What is it, Delaine?"

"Where are you going?" The ten year old went back to his bag, throwing more clothes in, then reaching under his bed. "I'm... going away for a while, Delanie. But I'll be back, I promise." He pulled out a wooden box and flipped it open. Inside were six knives. He picked the three biggest ones and put two in the side pocket of the bag. The third went in his back pocket. He put the box back under the bed and zipped up the bag, throwing it on. He took his sisters hands and sat her at the kitchen table. He went to the fridge and pulled out a cardboard box.

"Here you go, Delanie." He opened it up and inside were five cupcakes. Chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting. On top of each one was a blue and white stripped candle. Delanie giggled and covered her mouth with her hands. Dallas held up his lighter and said, "Fire is very dangerous, sis'. Don't play with it, okay?" Delanie nodded furiously. Dallas flipped it open and lit the flame, and held it to each of the candles. When he was done, he blew out the lighter.

Delanie blew out the candles as her brother sang to her, giggling between candles. When she was done he picked up one and peeled off the paper, then handed it to her. She laughed and bit into her cupcake. As she was eating, Dallas told her stories. Later that night, she finally went to bed. While she was sleeping, Dallas kissed her forehead and tucked her bear, Chester, under her arm. "Happy birthday, Cupcake."
