I was in the process of writing another fanfic, but the plot bunnies had other ideas. So this little one-shot is inspired by the song Little Talks by Of Monsters And Men. This isn't a songfic though
Disclaimer: Wicked is not owned by me. Same with the song Little Talks.
Elphaba usually stayed in one part of Kiamo Ko. She couldn't bear to walk the halls of the deserted castle, for even though he never lived here, everything reminded her of Fiyero. And though she would loathe to admit it, the creaking noises from the old castle terrified her. And they slowly sent her more into madness.
A cold and dark madness that terrified her and gave her a strange peace at the same time. A madness that made her think frightening thoughts. Thoughts of Fiyero's torture and if Nessa felt any pain when that house dropped on her. Thoughts of how her own demise would feel once the witch hunters came to kill her. She wondered if she should just give up before hand.
Giving up...that idea sounded so good, so…peaceful. And if she gave up, she would be reunited with not only her beloved Yero, but with sweet, little Nessa. And with her mother too. Oh how she missed all three of them. If she gave up, she wouldn't have to miss them anymore.
So Elphaba brought herself to the edge of the nearest window. She climbed onto the window sill and sat down. Gathering her courage for what she was about to do only took a few seconds.
So she tensed her body up and was about to push off when…
"Fae! What are you doing? Don't do this!" Elphaba knew that voice! But it can't be! It can't be Fiyero! He's dead! Maybe the spell saved him though! Maybe she finally did something good!
Elphaba slowly went back into the room and called out, "Yero? Fiyero is that you? Oh please tell me that's you." She looked around the room. No one was there. And so there was no answer.
She screamed. A long and loud wail of undying agony that seemed never ending. But she couldn't stop. How could she? She was nothing but a curse. A curse that ended the happiness of everyone around her. She was the cause for her entire family's deaths. She was the cause for Fiyero's death. She killed everyone that ever mattered, except for one.
But Glinda hated her. And she had every reason to. Elphaba hated herself too. Just like the rest of Oz she wanted her death to come.
So she went back to that window. "Listen voice, I'm going to do it whether you want me to or not. You're nothing but my imagination. You're nothing but the madness sent to plague me with the ghost of him. So voice, any last words before I end my pathetic life?" She knew that she was just prolonging the jump. But what was wrong with that? It was only natural, right?
She never expected the voice to answer, with the words swirling around her, but it did "Yes, I do have a few last words. Are you really going to let my sacrifice be in vain, Fae? Why don't you wait? Wait until the Witch Hunters come. They'll be here in about two hours, you know. So wait. For me, and we'll meet again soon. I love you Fae."
She broke down again.
Later, when she had about half an hour until the Witch Hunters came, she was visited by Glinda. And during that visit one of her Monkeys gave her a note. And it took her everything she had not to break down for the third time that day. For in the letter, which was short, simple and written in the most heartbreakingly familiar handwriting, was this:
My beloved Fae. I'm alive. You saved me. If you don't know, and I don't think you do, I'm the scarecrow. I joined the Witch Hunters to save you. You need to fake your death. Use a trapdoor…and a bucket of water. Make them think you melted. I'll be there as soon as I can. Wait for me Fae, we'll meet again soon. I love you Fae.
And so she waited.
