This was wriiten for a friend of mine, to cheer her up. It is a silly little ficlet based on a sugestion that Rose stays in the lifeboat, while Ruth falls out of it.
Ruth plunges into the ocean but survives the fall.
The icy water numbed all her senses. The billowing skirts clung to her legs threatening to entangle and drag her underwater. Slowly Ruth managed to swim over to a large door frame, she grabbed hold of the edge noticing it's lovely carvings and attention to detail; it surely must be a 1st class door "oh thank goodness, I really don't want a 3rd class splinter in my posterior, how would I explain that". It took Ruth about 5-10 minutes to climb up on the door she absolutely did not want anyone to see her petticoats. Ruth sat upright refusing to lie down (well her corset was as uptight as herself so she couldn't).
The air was getting colder and the cries were getting quieter, suddenly the cry "Is there anyone alive out there?" came drifting over to her "Oh yes there certainly is and I really must say that it has taken you a frightfully long time to come and fetch me, I will undoubtedly be having words with your superior over this complete ineptitude now........" At this point the other voice suddenly went still, almost as if he was drifting (or rowing for his sanity) away from poor frightened Ruth.
Ruth almost toppled of the door "what in heaven's name now" a dark figure turned towards her "Cal! How, what, where, do you know if Rose is alright?" Cal gave her a withering look "I am in the middle of the damn ocean woman of course I don't know if she is alright, now move over and let me onboard that damn contraption" Whoosh, water started to spill over the door "Cal no you really must stop, stay calm" Ruth was beginning to become very worried about her precarious situation. Everything would have been fine if it hadn't been for that dreadful woman throwing her out of the lifeboat, she couldn't remember if she had seen her at the meal with E.J. what was her name - oh yes a Ms Karen Martin-Travolta :)
Cal was hanging on to the edge of the door "Ruth damn it let me on board, you are supposed to be a member of my family so you will do as I say right this instant or else!" Cal made a lunge for the door "I will have this door and to hell with you and your unruly daughter" suddenly Cal toppled backwards sinking deeper into the water until you could just see his hands slowly disappear.
Ruth started to giggle "The reason I always travel 1st class is that the service is sooooo much better" and uncorked the bottle of champagne which had been wedged into a piece of panneling on the door. At least Cal's head hadn't upset the fine drink. Sipping the finest champagne onboard the most luxurious door in the ocean Ruth couldn't stop laughing, "Oh dear Rose you are free at last, more free than I ever was; count Cal as my parting gift to you."
When the Mackey-Bennett reached the area to search for bodies they found Ruth lying frozen on the door grinning and still clutching the bottle. The rescuers, recovered her and made her decent, they did wonder however what someone could have found to grin about under the circumstances.
Cal was never found.
