Chapter 1: My Classmate is a Vampire!
Four years ago, 2005
The sun began to rise shyly from its nightly slumber. Its weak rays shone colours of orange, yellow and pink. The air was chilly from the night's cool blanket. Everywhere was quiet except for the panting from four young adults running blindly from three ominous shadows. They leaped effortlessly off the dark tiled rooves of houses one after another, eager to shake off the enemy.
The smallest of the young ones slipped off a loose tile and began falling towards the cold, hard earth. It wasn't very high but she would be in great pain if she fell on a wrong angle due to the high speed she was travelling. The tallest changed direction in mid-air and flew to the falling child. Catching her by her wrist, he swang her onto his back piggy-back style. As he touched the ground, he sprang back onto the roof and caught up with his friends acting like it was meant to happen.
"I'm sorry," the little one whispered.
"It's ok," a voice rang through the air like a bell, "I'm proud you lasted this long." The three ones left running jumped off the roof and began running on a cemented footpath.
"Not to break up your little love fest or anything," the tall one began, his tone with a hint of sarcasm, "but they've stopped." All three runners stopped in their tracks.
Looking back, all they saw was a quiet neighbourhood and the sun slowly awakening. No ominous shadows.
"I think we lost them," the bell voiced one said quietly.
"Finally!" mumbled the boy with chocolate-coloured hair. He clenched his fist and brought it into his chest.
"So what do we do now?" the little one asked, trying to hide her uncertainty.
The bell-voiced one took a few steps toward the rising sun. The rays caught her eyes and they lit up, sparkling crimson red and full of hope.
"I think we should try and act like normal humans," she said after a moment. The chocolate-coloured hair guy stared at her as if to say are-you-crazy-or-something.
"Cool!" the little one said brightly, ignoring chocolate-haired guy. "Does that mean I can go to school?"
"Maybe," she replied.
"Do you have any suggestions?" the tall one questioned. The chocolate-haired guy started whispering curses. The tall one turned to him said "Oh, shut your trap you little cunt!" the chocolate haired stopped cursing and turned his head away, pouting. The little one stuck out her tongue. During this little episode, the crimson-eyed girl was deep in thought, thinking of a place they could call home.
"I think I know a place," she said as she ran ahead at human speed. "C'mon, follow me." The tall one gently eased the little one onto the ground and ran to catch up to crimson-eyes. The little one and chocolate-haired guy ran closely behind them. They smiled at each other knowing that they would be safe. For now.
