I've been wanting to do word prompts again as it seems my muse is fizzling.
To get today's prompt, I had to reach for the nearest book to me, open it, and do a Google image search of the tenth word, and then write about what comes to mind. Unfortunately the nearest book to me was my Collins dictionary. Try again, C. Oh, the DMC novel, yay. :D
My word prompt is: DOOR.
There was nothing eerie about the door itself.
It was a sturdy, double paneled door made of dark, heavy wood. Dust and rain had faded the colour slightly throughout the years. She clenched her fists deep within the pockets of her coat and stared the door down like it was a foe. All she had to do was reach out and knock.
A couple of raps with her knuckles would be good. Just enough to let her presence be known. She gritted her teeth and uncurled one fist. She pulled her hand from the warmth of her pocket and put her fingers against the door. The wood was surprisingly warm to the touch. She stood for a moment, the breeze dancing around her ankles and playing through her coat, as she reconsidered her options.
Knock, and the door will open; and with it pandora's box.
Turn back now and leave the door in peace; and abandon the only legacy her father had left her beyond that door.
Amazing, how it was nothing but a mere slab of wood that kept her at bay. Part of her thought it was amusing how a door - an inanimate object - could make her heart pound so hard. For a long, dragging second, she fought her fiery impulse to kick the door open and be done with it.
Then, just as she formed a fist with her hand once more to knock, a voice spoke from her right.
"You could always use the doorbell." It was the same man she'd seen before, which set alarms off in the back of her mind. Was he following her? He gave her a roguish smile when he walked up the steps and joined her side. He turned the doorknob and looked down at her with sharp blue eyes. "Wouldn't want to break a nail now, would we?"
You can try guess who it is if you want. Chances are you'll get it wrong. Wrong. WRONG. MUAHAHAHA! Or not. Who knows?
