Jade stood in the corner of the gymnasium, her head down, cheeks stained with running mascara. Karkat- her original date to the dance- had left her for Terezi. And she just stood there and sobbed.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

Dave roamed the dance floor, alone, dateless, feeling sick. Bro made him go to this stupid high school dance, that only made him want to fight his sibling even more than usual.

The teen stopped walking, he heard-was that ..crying? He turned around to find Jade sobbing. Dave flash stepped to her side, lifting her chin with his index finger, "Jade?"

"Hey, Dave." He could tell something was wrong, her usual happy tone was replaced by a quiet, scared one.

"Y' know, pretty girls shouldn't cry-ever," he wiped a tear finding its way down her face off, "They don't need to."

No response. Not knowing what to do, Dave pulled up a chair and sat, patting his leg for the girl to sit. To his surprise, she did.

" So," Dave snaked his arms around the waist of Jade, pulling her closer ," want to tell me what happened?"

"Karkat left me f-for Ter-ezi." Her voice was shaky, God, that made Dave feel horrible.

" Well, Karkats just an ass-hat anyway , he doesn't deserve a girl like you."

"Wh-what do you mean?"

" Jade, you're adora-you see, you're really pre-" Dave stumbled over his words and sighed ,"Jade, you're amazing; okay?"

There was an uncomfortable silence.

"Thank you, Dave," Jade speaking let Dave take a breath, " if I am amazing, then I'm not the only amazing person here, Dave, you are too."

He paused ," Thanks Jade."

She nodded her head. The two sat in silence… until Dave turned Jade's face to look at him , "So, the slow dance is gonna start soon, and I was wondering if you wanted to y' know-dance?"

Jade looked at him, eyes sparkling, "But wouldn't that break 'Cool Kid Code' or something?"

"I'll take my chances."

Jade wiped her cheek, rubbing off some dried make up, "Then lets go!" she stood from his lap.

Dave offered a small smile and held his arm out for her, "Shall we, my princess?"

Jade returned the smile, locking their arms together. Dave led her to an open place on the floor . placing his hands on Jade's hips, Dave realized something: Jade made him happy, every time she giggled, every time she looked at him with those green orbs, his heart fluttered. And it fluttered more when Jade wrapped her arms around Dave's neck, pulling their bodies closer.

The song started with a strum of a guitar, followed by a sweet, soft melody. Jade rested her head on Dave's chest, relaxing a bit. He took in a sharp breath and let his head fall into the crook of Jade's neck, she smelled sweet, like flowers and hairspray. Dave took it in , her smell, her warmth, her soft touch.

"Hey?" Jade's voice shook again.

"Yeah?"

"What are we?"

Dave's heart skipped a best and he instantaneously said , "Together, I hope."

"Yes."

"Huh?.."

"I like you a lot Dave." Jade's words were muffled from Dave's shirt fabric. The boy with the shades lifted Jade's chin and gently placed a kiss on her cheek , causing Jade to blush after he pulled away, " I'm sure I like you a lot more."

"Prove it then."

Was Jade challenging him?

"Fine then," with that Dave pressed his lips to hers for a long moment and pulled away, "Is that enough evidence… Girlfriend?"

Dave had wanted to say that for such a long time.
