"Hello Lacey, this is Katherine Holmes. You auditioned for the role of Maureen in our upcoming revival of RENT. You did not receive the role you wanted because we thought that you would be better as Mimi. First rehearsal is Friday and it starts at eleven. Goodbye!"

I dropped my coffee when I heard that. Literally, I was sipping my Starbucks while walking through Times Square and I dropped my cappuccino on the ground, totally splattering a total stranger and myself with my coffee.

"Oh my goodness, I am so sorry!" I apologized.

"It's fine, really." The stranger spoke with a British accent. He had messy black hair and glasses. When he looked up, I noticed his eyes were the exact shade of emerald green that mine are. Well, when I'm not wearing my brown contacts.

"Holy crap, you look like me." I blurted out. He stared at me, his mouth hanging open, before running away without a word.

"What the heck?" I mused to myself before going to my friend Maria's house.

"So, he just ran away? Without a single word? Not even a 'goodbye'?"

I nodded. Maria rolled her eyes. "What an idiot!"

"I know, right?" I agreed. "Who do you think he is?"

"Your long-lost brother?" Maria joked. We both laughed.

"Alright, enough about the 'mysterious stranger'." I put finger quotes around "mysterious stranger". "I didn't just come to give back that pair of jeans that I borrowed the other day, I have news."

"Oh my gosh, you're playing Maureen?" Maria squealed excitedly.

"No." I said. Her face fell and she stopped clapping. "I got cast as Mimi!"

I swear, by the look on Maria's face, I think she might have passed out. Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped, leaving her mouth in the shape of an O.

"OH MY GOSH! YOU'RE MIMI FREAKING MARQUEZ!" Maria started jumping up and down excitedly, holding both of my hands. "That is amazing. I wish I was as talented as you are!"

"Oh, shut up. I'm not that talented. And besides, you have an amazing voice!" I told my friend. She just rolled her eyes.

"Sure, and you're not gonna win a Tony for doing this. I'm the most horrible actor on the planet, next to Kristin Stewart."

It's true. Maria can sing like an angel, but she has the most horrible case of stage fright I have ever witnessed. Once she gets onstage, she freezes up and her eyes get all big and her breathing gets faster. One time in middle school, we were required to try out for an extracurricular activity and I made Maria do drama with me. The moment she got onstage she started breathing really heavily and she almost hyperventilated. Ever since,
