Unnoticed
They were quiet.
There was no need for a bickering front, loud denial of attraction not yet understood. There was no need for blatant displays of innuendo hastily disguised as a close friendship. There was need but without taint.
People knew they went to the same juku every night. Sometimes another teammate would mention maybe they should try the same place, but somehow the idea always fell through. Before and after juku was their time. Alone on the streets, they embraced anonymity but not each other. Here they could talk freely, but a misplaced hand or misplaced arm, and the spell broke, everyone staring at them. Were they two boys or a girl and a boy? Strangers always stared, always trying to figure out if they were scandalous or normal. Usually they were lost to the crowds before the strangers could deduce it was two boys holding hands.
This afternoon was like any other before it. Tennis practice came and went; hidden affections and shouting fistfights of denial echoed around the quiet couple. After cleaning up, the pair left with friends, all of the third years exiting the school gate together, all parting for their own destinations.
"Fujiko?" a boy turning right suddenly asked.
Fuji paused and looked back over his shoulder where he was turning to go left with Kikumaru. "What is it, Taka-san?"
"I'll meet you at the corner, right?" Kawamura put his hands in his pockets. They changed meeting places periodically depending on where they would be before heading to juku.
"Ah, yes." Fuji nodded and the pair parted, the shorter boy's lips quirking into a small but genuine smile.
