Just a bunch of green papers

Joyce was smiling when she took her purse. For once, Chloe and her had managed to talk without any screams, her daughter had seemed understanding and she didn't even hear David and her argue outside.

"Today is going to be a good day!" She happily thought

However, as soon as she lifted her purse from the dinner table, she frowned. It seemed heavier than usual. She opened it and when she saw the cause of the weight difference, she thought she was dreaming. Inside of this bag, there were at least almost two hundred dollars in it.

Where did it come from?!

She tried to reason calmly.

It could not be David. David was still job hunting and even if he had enough savings to lend her that much money, he would have told her, it wasn't his style to do things and not tell about it, at least, not these kind of importants actions, which needed to be discussed as a couple.

The only other person who could have had access to her purse was Chloe.

For a moment, Joyce was scared.

How on Earth did Chloe manage to get so much money?!

Had she done something illegal to gain it? She wasn't the type of girl who'd work part time legally and save to help at home, not anymore.

Had she stolen it?

If so, how did she do?

What if she was caught?

What if they needed to pay back?

"Was it during the Firewalk concert she went to? In these kind of parties, people don't pay much attention to their stuff... Which means we are safe, kind of."

It was horrible to think that way she knew.

"Wait, why didn't Chloe keep it for herself? Unless..."

Chloe had mentioned her engagement ring, pawned. Joyce had tried to protect Chloe's feelings, but her daughter was right, she wanted to sell it. It broke her heart to do so. She loved David with all her heart, but William was and always would be her first love, so for her to sell the ring he offered her when he offered his heart to her as well on the same day, it broke her inside. William wouldn't have minded, he would have been sad, but he would have understood, memories wouldn't fill their stomachs or pay the bills. Chloe had put this money inside so she would not have to make that sacrifice. She could feel tears in her eyes. She also smiled, a sad and bittersweet smile. Deep down, Chloe hadn't changed that much, she was still as kind hearted as she was before tragedy fell upon them. Maybe she'd have to sell her ring one day. But for now, at least, it was safe.

"I'll have to bake her her favourite cake."

Because even if she couldn't say it openly, because she had no proof depiste her assurance of what Chloe did, there was no way Joyce wouldn't make her understand just how grateful she was.

The End
