Hey! Just a short song-fic using the song Sink or Swim by Tyrone Wells; they played it in the Season Six promo. Sort of gives a little blurb on each character in the aftermath of George's death. Enjoy!
Caught in the middle of a cross-fire…
Arizona didn't know what to do. All around her, the people she loved were collapsing, sobbing, devastated. She knew well there was little to do for someone grieving that hard a loss, so she sat. She sat, waiting for it all to end.
Lost my balance on the high wire…
Izzie's eyes fluttered open. "Alex…" she whispered. He came to her bedside quickly. "George. He's… gone." And one lonely tear fell down her cheek.
Trying to figure out what to do. Pushed to the edge of my reason…
Christina was not the crying type. She was not the lay-in-bed-sobbing type. She just stared, unbelieving. "No," she thought, "George isn't that stupid. He wouldn't die. That just can't happen." She repeated this over and over, even though Owen had said many times that he was gone, gone, gone, gone…
Everywhere around me is treason. I don't want to do that to you!
Owen didn't really know George. But that didn't matter. It didn't matter in the slightest. Owen crumpled, head in hands, horrified that he was the cause of this young man's death. He was the one to tell him to go be a hero. He was the one who convinced George to join the army. And he was the reason that George was gone, forever.
Khamikaze airplanes in the sky! Are we going down?
Arizona couldn't hold Callie up. She fell to the floor, unable to bear the weight of the pain and loss. George. Her sweet, loving George. Maybe they were divorced, maybe she had moved on, but that didn't mean she still didn't love him.
Or will we fly? This could be a shipwreck on the shore, or we could sail away forever more.
Meredith, still shaking from the horror of finding out that John Doe was George, finally saw Derek walking in the surgical hallway. "Derek," she whimpered. He ran to her, and she collapsed in his arms. "Shhh..." he comforted her. "It's ok. I'm here."
This time, it's sink or swim.
Finally, everyone was gathered in a graveyard for George's funeral. Some cried, some sobbed, some stared blankly ahead, not able to comprehend. Izzie held on tight to Alex. Meredith was limp in Derek's arms. Callie had her head on Arizona's shoulder. Christina, placed neatly near Owen, stood stiff and unmoving. As the service ended, the four interns and Bailey gathered around there beloved friend's grave, bowing their heads, and saying their last goodbyes.
