A Broken Man

"After all that we have been through, don't we at least deserve an explanation? After all the shit you've been through don't you even want to know why, Carolina?" Church asked the worn freelancer.

The director chuckled in an insane type of laugh. "What is there to explain epsilon? You remember why I did it."

"Yeah we all know why you did it. You had to win the war, but not for your country, not for the good of anything. You had to end the war for her," Carolina spat.

"Then I discovered her memory," The director murmured. "But memory has never been a perfect science and I couldn't remember her in the right way. I remembered her as strong and beautiful. I remembered her as smart and perfect. But I also remembered her death. How could I forget? The only person U ever loved died and I couldn't even save her!" The director cried out.

"But you couldn't fracture your mind like the Alpha," Epsilon spat.

"She told me to remember her and to win the war so that's what I did," Leonard spat.

"And you didn't care what happened to anybody else including yourself," Carolina realized. "You didn't even care about the AI's or the Alpha," The freelancer growled. "This was always about her. Why did you even bother with the scoreboard?" She demanded.

"You and Agent South fought harder when challenged," The director explained. "We were at war I-"

"You used us and the war as an excuse to create this fake world where Alison was still alive," Epsilon accused. "But she is dead. She never wanted to come back! At first I thought this was about her buy it isn't really is it? It's about you! It's about how you couldn't live without her," Epsilon sighed.

"And you can't love anyone but her," Carolina spat. "No matter how hard we competed for your acceptance we never had a chance because you couldn't live without her. It was always her! Why is she so god damn special?" Carolina demanded her voiced chocked with sadness.

The director looked at the red headed freelancer and sighed. "The way she talked was full of confidence. She was never afraid to fight for what she believed in. Her temper was fiery and sharp but her love was incredibly soft. She was as addictive to everyone she talked to when she wasn't pissing people off," the director chuckled dryly. "She was passionate and she saw something in me that no one else could. She was everything good in the world, and when she died what else was there to live for other than keeping my promise. Now… now I have nothing. I can't bring her back. Her memory was all that kept me going but now… I'm old and I can't keep remembering her forever," The old man said his voice full of exhaustion.

"But I can't forget her either," Epsilon whispered. "Even Alpha couldn't forget her and he got rid of his own memories."

"I wish I could forget her," Carolina spat.

The director stood up quickly startling the freelancer. "She loved you! She was devastated when she thought that you died. That's when she turned on project freelancer the most that's when she snapped and Omega didn't help. Just thought you should know," The director whispered.

Carolina turned to leave but he stopped her. "Leave your pistol please?"

As she left he closed his eyes and sighed, "You were my greatest creation," because she was so like his beloved Alyson. She was strong brave and had the same fiery temper and passion. It was himself that had changed. He was shattered, the broken remains of a man.

BANG!
