It was sad to see the village in the state that it was; once proud and loyal, now in ruins. The problem was the moral of the people. There was barley any hope in the beginning of the war, but that hope had withered away. It wasn't like that there weren't any rebel groups, but there was no point. Kakashi knew when to admit defeat.
It had started with the Fourth Hokage. He had made a choice to protect the village by giving up his life and damning his own son. He had meant to make Naruto a hero, but not everything goes the way planned. It wasn't a stupid idea, but you can't always get what you want.
The problems really started with the Third Hokage. For a man whose reputation was based on wisdom, it was sorely lacking in one of the major decisions of Konoha history. Who let an orphaned child live by himself, surrounded by villagers' hate? Kakashi believed that this was the ruin of the village, but only because the village was filled with idiots. It was funny how a village so renowned for prestige and power was just overflowing with stupidity.
Naruto was an idiot, but he was a boy who could bring out hope to anyone. Everyone had the belief that he could make it; he would be the one to win. It was that belief that shut their eyes to the truth. How stupid of a village to lay their hopes on a fifteen year old boy. A boy that they knew was an idiot. It wasn't Naruto's fault. It was the fault of the Third Hokage and the villagers that kept him clueless.
If the villagers had not kept their prejudice, Naruto would have grown up knowing friendship. The life lessons one must learn in order to deal with people. Before it had seemed that Sai was lacking in this category, but the one who really needed help was Naruto.
Naruto would have grown learning the hardships of keeping friends. There would be times that they would get along and times they didn't. He wouldn't have leaned on Team Seven so much, and he would have known when to have let go.
The problem with anyone else is that even though they tried to convince Naruto to give up on Sasuke, there was no real emphasis on lectures, because everyone believed in Naruto. The truth of the matter, Naruto had already failed to bring Sasuke back. Even with extra training they must have believed that Sasuke was sitting on his ass doing nothing, until the years Naruto returned.
There was no hope in the war after Naruto died. Everyone who believed in him gave up, before the real war even started.
It was stupid how this village worked. The strongest shinobi in the village was to become Hokage. Everyone wanted Naruto to take the title, but now they knew they should have seen it coming. The Uchiha had come to take the title by force. After defeating Orochimaru and Itachi, it was easy to come in and deceive a village full of idiots.
After claiming the heads of the two threats of the village, Konoha had welcomed Sasuke with open arms. Tsunade and the rest of Naruto's friends wanted him dead for treason, but the council couldn't give up the last of the once most powerful clan.
It was easy for Sasuke to come in and kill everyone that opposed him, but it wasn't like that was the only mistake the village made, the way things were going, it wouldn't be the last.
