A Oneshot About Firestar

I looked sadly over the camp from my den near the Highrock. What did Bluestar do to deserve to die? Oh, it was all my fault! I hadn't gotten to her in time!

"You are wrong, Firestar. No cat could have done more."

I must've been dreaming, because the voice speaking was that of Yellowfang, a previous medicine cat that had served in two Clans. She had become close friends with me. However, why was it that she was talking to me?

"Bluestar died not because of you, but because of Tigerstar and his ruthless dogs. Why are you still worried about this? Life is good."

I looked down. StarClan were usually right, but this time...

"You failed to save your leader. Tigerstar succeeded in killing your leader. Failing to save and succeeding to kill are two very different things, you know, Firestar."

I wanted to wail. Yellowfang had no right to disagree with me! It was all my fault she died. It didn't matter whether I failed to save her or succeeded in killing her, because either way, she died!

"Get over it. Get out of your den and order the patrols."

I sighed. "Okay."

I was jolted awake by a stab from a paw. "Oh, hi, there you are, Firestar. Slept well, I hope?" mewed a voice that belonged to my mate, Sandstorm.

"Has Greystripe ordered the patrols yet?" I asked groggily. Despite what Yellowfang had told me about doing it myself, there was a Clan deputy.

"He's sick, mouse-brain. I just ordered them for you. You're on patrol with Mousefur, Spiderpaw, Brackenfur, and Cloudtail."

I snorted. "Oh?" I didn't approve of any non-deputy cat ordering patrols. Mousefur was a little cranky, Spiderpaw was energetic, Brackenfur was calm, and Cloudtail was...well, Cloudtail was Cloudtail, of course.

You know how Sandstorm gets when she's irritated, Yellowfang's voice growled.

I got up and padded outside of my den. Mousefur and Spiderpaw were waiting for me. Brackenfur was explaining to Whitepaw that no, he couldn't train her until he got back and that no, she couldn't come on the patrol with him.

Cloudtail was near the gorse tunnel, twitching his tail. I followed Mousefur and Spiderpaw as Cloudtail yowled to Brackenfur about being too late. Brackenfur came.

I took the rear of the patrol. That patrol made me feel good, for some reason. Still, Bluestar's death bothered me.

Almost nothing could wash away my guilt.
