The Outdoor Temperature Conjecture
If they didn't hurry they were going to be late to Raj's traditional Christmas potluck. Sheldon had stopped at the grocery store and picked up a box of Christmas cookies on his way to Amy's apartment on the bus as their contribution, but it was getting dangerously close to 7 pm, the beginning of the party.
Sheldon knocked in his typical way - "Amy. Amy. Amy." - but there was no answer from the vixen.
With a sigh, Sheldon got out the spare key Amy had lent him and unlocked her door. He hoped he wouldn't have to rouse her from an afternoon nap. Or perhaps Amy had hurt herself and couldn't get to the door or call out to him.
This thought sent a flash of panic through his gut, and he opened the door as quickly as he could.
Sheldon was about to call out "Amy?" when he suddenly heard faint singing from the bathroom.
"I really can't stay...I've got to go 'way..."
Was that Amy singing? he thought, his interest piqued. He'd never heard her sing before, and she had a very pleasant voice.
Carefully, he sat down on her sofa in his usual spot, wanting to hear as much of her singing as he could.
"This evening has been so very nice..." she continued.
Sheldon suddenly had a vision of Amy and himself singing the song together, for it was the duet Baby, It's Cold Outside. He shook his head, demanding the thought to leave his mind.
But it stayed put.
"My mother will start to worry," Amy continued in the bathroom.
"Beautiful, what's your hurry?" Sheldon answered quietly, before slapping a hand over his mouth to stop himself.
"My father will be pacing the floor..."
"Listen to that fireplace roar," he sang, a little more boldly this time, giving up any hope of putting his terribly wonderful idea to rest before the song was over.
"So really I'd better scurry," Amy sang sweetly.
"Beautiful, please don't hurry..."
Sheldon stood up, unsure whether he should let her know he was here or not.
"Well, maybe just a half a drink more..."
"Put some records on while I pour," sang Sheldon, staring at the box of cookies in his hands and pretending it was a record player, like the one his mother used to have.
"The neighbors might think..."
"Baby, it's bad out there..."
"Say, what's in this drink?"
"No cabs to be had out there..."
Sheldon moved closer to the bathroom, wondering what she could possibly be doing in the bathroom for this long.
"I wish I knew how..."
"Your eyes are like starlight now," he sang, imagining Amy's pretty green eyes.
"...to break the spell."
"I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell..."
"I ought to say 'no, no, no, sir'..."
"Mind if I move in closer?" Sheldon sang, only a few feet away from the door now.
Amy paused. She had heard his shenanigans.
The next line came out a little shakier than the rest. "At least I'm gonna say that I tried..."
"What's the sense in hurting my pride?" sang Sheldon, loud and clear.
"I really can't stay..." Amy sang. Sheldon could tell that she was closer to the door.
"Baby, don't hold out!" he replied.
"Ah, but it's cold outside," they sang together as Amy slowly opened the door with the biggest smile he had ever seen on her face.
They stood there, staring at each other for a few seconds. Sheldon thought that Amy looked rather nice with her purple sweater and flowered dress on.
Amy blushed and looked down at her feet. "That was quite enjoyable, Sheldon."
"I agree," he said. "If Koothrappali breaks out his karaoke machine I think we should show it off to the rest of our friend group."
"All right, then. Shall we be off?" Amy said, gesturing to the door.
Sheldon nodded, and away they went to a night of food, friendship, and the only enjoyable karaoke experience Sheldon had ever had.
