The Sled
1965
"Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh, HEY!" Kitty Forman sang as she pressed the gingerbread man cutter into the cookie dough. She loved this time of year even the normally gruff Red had a smile on his face, well that might have had something to do with the rum spiked egg nog, but it was still that time of the year when everybody was happy. She noticed the new neighbors 'little' (she wasn't so little!) girl wandering around in their driveway walking in a circle in the crunchy slush. The oven timer went off so she took the cookies out of the oven and put the new sheet in. She got a glass out and went to pour the milk. If she couldn't fawn over the "I want to be alone, Mother." Laurie and Eric was with his friends in the basement probably up to no good, she was going to fawn over this child. Besides, she shouldn't look so sullen it was almost Christmas. She opened the door and went to bring her in the warm, cinnamon scented Forman kitchen.
"Come in," What was her name? Dina? Debbie? Donna! "Donna, it's freezing out there. I made some cookies."
"Thank you, Mrs. Forman." Donna took off her red hat and mittens but not her coat.
"Why don't you take off your coat, dear?"
"I don't want to. Is Eric home?"
"Aww!" Kitty didn't mean to gush out loud, it was so cute Eric had a little girl friend, "He's in the basement playing with Steven and Michael. Do you want to go down there?"
"No." Donna bit the head off her cookie
But the smell of the cookies got too much for the three little boys, especially Steven Hyde who didn't have anything to eat all day as they made their noisy way up the stairs.
"Mommy, can we have some cookies?" Eric asked-what was SHE doing here? She sat on his head yesterday because he wouldn't give up his Sit & Spin and that was partly because she wouldn't let him ride her sweet Big Wheel.
"Of course, sit down boys."
"What's SHE doing here?" Eric finally asked out loud
"Eric, be nice to Donna." Kitty cautioned "I don't like you." He whispered [he kind of did, but no one could know she was a GIRL]
"I don't like you, either!" Donna stuck out her tongue
Kitty could tell that Steven didn't have anything to eat the way he was scarfing down the cookies so she felt compelled to make him a peanut butter and jam sandwich.
"Hey, can I have a sandwich too, Mrs. Forman?" asked Kelso
Donna hated when people yelled, she was moping around the driveway because her parents were fighting (again). She wanted to play with Eric but he was being mean, so she crushed his cookies with her hand.
"Hey! Mommy, Donna broke my cookies!"
"Why are there always kids in this house?" Enter Red, which made Eric sit up straight and stop whining about Donna breaking his cookies.
"Because my Mom says we make too much noise." Kelso replied
Midge knocked on the door and let herself in. "There you are, Donna! Your Father and I were worried sick wondering where you were."
"Everyone's kids are always here, this is not the Forman Day Care center."
"Hush, Red! Hi, Midge would you like some coffee?" Kitty craved adult conversation.
"Maybe, some other time, Kitty. I just came to get Donna ready for her ballet lesson."
Which caused the three boys to make girly noises and laugh over the thought of the neighbor girl taking ballet.
"Okay! I reclaim my kitchen back, all of you take your cookies and go downstairs in the basement!" Red said
"But Donna broke my cookies." Eric whispered
"Are you going to cry, Forman?" asked Hyde, even then he liked to call Eric by his last name.
"If he does, I'll kick his ass."
"Red---"
"No." Eric replied as Kitty handed him two cookies on his way out.
