Sachiko Yagami was happy to say her family life was perfectly normal, thank you very much.
She had a loving husband, who, even though he wasn't around much, was a faithful and kind man. She had a sweet young daughter, who perhaps was a bit lazy with her schoolwork and a bit silly with her celebrity crushes, but all in all was a good kid.
And her oldest child, Light Yagami.
He was one of the brightest teens in Japan, always number one on the nationwide exams. And when she heard him shouting things in his room, she didn't think anything of it. He was, of course, a genius. And every genius has his own quirks. Shouting could be one of them. Right?
Of course, he shouted about becoming a God of a new world. But Sachiko was a two-dimensional character who chose to stay painfully ignorant about the fact that her handsome young genius was a mass murderer. Even when she could clearly hear him screaming and laughing like a maniac through the thin walls.
Perhaps it was simply a hobby he had picked up. A video game, maybe? Like Dungeons and Dragons or Runescape or World of Warcraft. He could be just as successful in a gaming world as he could be in real life. Yes, that must be it. Light Yagami was such an incredible gamer that he became the God of cyberspace. Maybe he was a little spirited in his celebrations, but who was she to judge him?
Definitely.
She put the colander back on the counter and brought her fist up, clenching it determinedly. That was the reason. He was God of the cyberspace.
"Mom?" Sayu asked from the living room. "What's Light doing?"
Sachiko jumped and listened.
"I PROTECT THE INNOCENT AND THOSE WHO FEAR EVIL. I AM THE ONE WHO WILL BECOME THE GOD OF THE NEW WORLD THAT EVERYONE DESIRES. L! I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN WHEREVER YOU ARE HIDING AND I WILL ELIMINATE YOU. I AM JUSTICE!" came Light's yells from upstairs.
Water from the colander of lettuce dripped from Sachiko's fingertips as she froze there. How should she explain this to someone like Sayu?
"Uum, he's just…playing a video game," Sachiko muttered evasively. "And apparently he's looking for this guy named L to...assassinate I guess. Maybe he's a threat to the crown of God of the Azeroth or something."
"Oh," Sayu said. She shook her head and her lips curled into a smile. "For a second there it sounded like he was Kira and was announcing his challenge to the superdetective who is only known by the letter L. There was just a broadcast about him."
"Don't be silly," Sachiko said absently. "I'd definitely know if something like that was happening in my own home."
I'm a bad person. I shouldn't make fun of Sachiko like this. Her son killed her husband, almost killed her daughter. Now he's dead and she's catatonic. Poor Sachiko.
But really. HOW do you not notice something like that?
