Disclaimer: …I still don't own Pokemon.
Author's Note: Because I always found it odd that the last starter Pokemon just kinda sits around the whole game… until DP came out.
Anyway this is Torchic's POV, because Torchic is my favorite starter, but lately I've been finding myself starting with Treecko a lot instead…
Impatience
I'm starting to get impatient with patience.
Sitting around in the Professor's lab really isn't all that bad. I'd be lying if I said he mistreats me. I get plenty of food, and he's not so bad of a guy, really.
I used to be here for research, as Torchic are rare in the wild, and Professor Birch likes rare things. He also had a Treecko and a Mudkip here before.
The difference now is that Professor Birch realized that we're rather balanced strength-wise, and all of us were pretty docile. Therefore, he figured we'd be decent choices for kids starting out on journeys. He's really pretty famous, so he even gets kids from out of town sometimes.
Anyway, lately he's gotten two. Newbie trainers, I mean. His own son chose Treecko, who was always slightly aloof, but still not a bad choice because of his speed. Mudkip and I figured we'd still get to see Treecko a lot anyway, as his trainer is related to the professor and all.
But then one of the professor's friends wanted his daughter to start training. She chose Mudkip, not for his strength or endurance, but merely because she thought he was cute. She's really rather a clueless girl, but she seemed nice enough.
So not long after, the professor's son and Mudkip's trainer left on their separate journeys. Brendan and Treecko do a lot of field work. May's more into contests, which her father apparently took a while to warm up to.
I envy Treecko more than Mudkip, I can say for sure. Just getting to explore and meet new Pokemon is far more preferable to sitting around all day, but I suppose coordinating would be too. Sometimes I think that being a contest Pokemon could be fun too; all that attention would be nice.
But then again, so could being a normal trained Pokemon. Sure, I've heard from some of the stronger Pokemon that Birch has that battling definitely isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Birch says he's trying to look into getting a new trainer to get me. He says to be patient, and one day I'll get to go out and explore too. Most of the Pokemon he has he caught in the wild, on field training, so he has to let them out occasionally; they'd drive themselves crazy eventually if he didn't. I, on the other hand, was never wild, but bred; I never knew what the wild was like, so I just yearn for it.
Birch keeps telling me to wait it out. In the mean time, I have free roam of the lab, which is pretty generous, actually, but it isn't the same.
I don't know how much longer I can wait. I'm tired of the day-in, day-out repetitiveness of it all. I want adventure.
And after two cancelled trainers, I'm running out of patience.
I'll do it myself if I have to wait much longer.
