Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now…

It was the night before the kidnapping, and both hero-turned-antagonists felt as if the night would never end. The air lingered heavy and fidgety in the filthy apartment, cold from the January night air that was seeping through the cracks.

Nothing felt right. Mello couldn't bear to look at another chocolate bar; Matt couldn't stand to smoke another cigarette. Tomorrow could be the last day after all…Nothing mattered.

Matt remembered wishing on the stars on the night before every exam that Mello would be first that time. It always felt so empty when it didn't turn out that way.

Matt glanced out the grimy window, to see nothing but the brilliant white moon against the stark contrast of black sky. No stardust sprinkled over lush black velvet tonight.

Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now…

The last time Matt had wished on an airplane, Mello had left the next morning.

Wish right now…

But the heavens were kind enough tonight to not give Matt false hope.

There was not even an airplane in the sky.
