I sat there leaning against the tree with his head on my lap, my fingers playing absent-mindedly with his gravity-defying hair. We were both watching the sunset lazily, knowing full well that we may not see each other for a while. Finally the sun disappeared and I leaned my head back with a smile on my lips.

After a while I felt him stand up. Not wanting to leave just yet I stayed in my position feeling his eyes watching me lovingly. Oh how I wish I didn't have to be home in 10 minutes, I just wanted to stay there with him for eternity.

I finally opened my eyes and for a moment we just stared at each other. He offered his hand and I took it happily, barely blinking when he pulled me close and wrapped his arms around my waist. I felt his cool yet oddly warm lips on my hair.

"I'm going to miss you."

"Don't doubt that I won't miss you either Karin."

"Hey Toshiro, could you do me a favor?"

He leaned back a bit and looked at me. We both knew that there would never be any guarantees that we would ever see each other again and that no promises could be made.

"Toshiro, I know that we may not see each other for a long time, possibly never again. Even so, I want you to promise me this: That you will try your best to come back, that you won't give up on this, on us ever."

He smiled at her, a sad one but a smile nonetheless. "I promise Karin. Do you promise to never forget me, to keep fighting for us no matter what?"

I leaned her head on his chest and whispered, "I promise."

And there they stood, two lovers exchanging not vows, not rings but a much deeper thing.

Their promises to each other, of their love.
