Summary: Did anyone else wonder what happened between Mr Darcy and Mr Bennet when he asked for Elizabeth's hand in marriage? Here is a little one shot of what I think happened. Review please!
Disclaimer: I own nothing! Even though I did wish I owned Mr Darcy himself.
May I have your daughter's hand in marriage?
Darcy knocked on the old wooden door of Mr Bennet's library. Elizabeth stood behind him in her nightdress and coat, he gave her one smile before he pushed the door open at Mr Bennet's call and walked in.
He stood in the doorway and bowed to Mr Bennet slightly before turning and closing the door. He looked back at Mr Bennet and found that he had stood.
"Mr Darcy, how can I merit this visit?" Mr Bennet said.
"Good day Mr Bennet. I apologise for interrupting you at such an hour but I must discuss some business which is of utmost importance to me." Mr Bennet stared at the young man and wondered to himself why this proud and disagreeable man would like to discuss business with him.
"Of course Mr Darcy," Mr Bennet said as he held his hand out to a chair. "On what type of business to come to me?" Darcy sat quickly and looked at the aged man who now sat next to him.
"It is on the matter of your daughter, Elizabeth."
"Elizabeth!"
"Yes." Darcy paused.
"Please, continue. Do not keep in suspense of why my daughter has a mention from you."
"I wanted to ask for your permission…for Elizabeth's hand in matrimony." Mr Bennet's mouth opened.
"You wish for Elizabeth's hand in matrimony?"
"I do sir, yes." Darcy nodded.
"May I ask as to what my daughter said to your offer?" Mr Bennet asked carefully.
"She was too glad to accept my hand. You may ask her yourself if you feel inclined to doubt me."
"I do not doubt you Mr Darcy. I do not see how I could doubt the word of a respectable young man. But will you make her happy? You have money to be sure but will you treat her as she deserves to be treat?"
"I would do nothing the less Mr Bennet, I respect your daughter greatly and would do anything possible to secure her happiness."
"I can now understand you Mr Darcy. You must know by now that Elizabeth is very special to me. I would not give her hand to you unless I could be assured that you would take care of her and love her as I do."
"I could give you my word on that Mr Bennet, Elizabeth is my life, I am sure that without her my life could not function properly." Mr Darcy put his head down slightly, unsure of what to say next.
"I feel that I have nothing further to say Mr Darcy." Darcy looked up at the man who now stood. "I would gladly give my daughter's hand to you. But be assured to indulge her properly as I have always done." Darcy stood at this and smiled at the man who was now to be his father-in-law.
"I thank you Mr Bennet. You have now made my life worthwhile." Darcy held his hand out to Mr Bennet and they shook hands for a moment reflecting on the new life they would live as new relations.
"Now, ask Lizzy to come and see me Mr Darcy." Darcy walked toward the door.
"I will sir," Darcy said as he bowed slightly. "And thank you." Darcy pulled open the door and saw her - his future wife! She rushed past him into her father's study and as he stood and watched the door close he saw her smile at him, that wonderful smile. He was to be her husband and as he rushed out of the house for some air. He stood in the garden as smiled for he had his love at last!
