UPDATED 1/25/2015

I

This tale that you humans have passed down through uncounted generations…

It tells of a war of unmatched scale and ferocity, the likes of which would never be seen again.

One dark, fateful day, the earth cracked wide and malevolent forces rushed forth from the fissure. They mounted a brutal assault upon the surface people, driving the land into deep despair… They burnt forests to ash, choked the land's sweet springs, and murdered without hesitation. They did all this in their lust to take the ultimate power protected by Her Grace, the goddess.

The power she guarded was without equal. Handed down by gods of old, this power gave its holder the means to make any desire a reality. Such was the might of the ultimate power that the old ones placed it in the care of the goddess.

To prevent this great power from falling into the hands of the evil swarming the lands… the goddess gathered the surviving humans on an outcropping of earth. She sent it skyward, beyond the reach of the demonic hordes. Beyond even the clouds.

With the humans safe, the goddess joined forces with the land dwellers and fought the evil forces, sealing them away. At least, peace was restored to the surface.

This is a tale that you humans have told for many ages, generation to generation… But there are other legends, long hidden away from memory, that are intertwined with this tale. Now, a new legend bound to this great story stands ready to be revealed. A legend that you take part in.

Zoey.

"Zoey?" I jumped and screeched, falling sideways out of my chair.

"Ow, gah!"

"Are you ok, sweetie?" My mother poked her head into my room. "What happened?"

"You scared me, is all," I replied with a sigh, standing up and sitting on my bed. "I was…" I waved my hands, "daydreaming."

"I see." She wrinkled her nose at me and sighed. "I'm going grocery shopping, could you watch Matthew for me? Just listen out for him."

"I'll wheel his bassinet in here with me," I told her and grinned. "He can sleep in here with me tonight. We'll probably be asleep when you get back."

"Thank you, sweetie, I love you." She kissed my forehead and left the room. I sat still, hearing her shut the front door and her car driving away. I heard Matthew start crying in the next room and sighed, standing up. I walked into the room and picked up the crying and wiggling mess of a baby boy. "Hey, Matt," I cooed, rocking him from side to side. "It's okay." Slowly his crying died down to sniffles and hiccups. "There we go, now, let's get back to my room." I laid him back down and wheeled his bassinet into the other room. I stopped the bassinet next to my bed and locked the wheels before sitting down.

I lay back and sigh, wiping my face. Matthew started to fuss again so I picked him up and laid him next to me. I took some of my pillows and made a barrier so he wouldn't roll off the bed. I stared at him and smiled, rubbing his tiny arm. He was so tiny and fragile looking. He had super light blonde hair and sky blue eyes. Mother said that he looked exactly like me when I was this small. I watched as Matthew took a deep breath and curled his fingers into my blouse. I smiled at my two month old brother and felt my eyelids droop. With a deep sigh I fell asleep.

I was in an odd place. I looked around in confusion. "Where am I?"

"This is your mind," a voice said from behind me. I gasped and spun around, a woman who looked exactly like me was standing there.

"My mind? Who are you? Why am I here?"

She nodded and smiled. "Yes, your mind, I am you, and you are here because you need to remember."

I stared at her wide eyed, this was all too much to take in at once. "Remember what and… how are you me? I'm me!"

"Both of those things are a little hard to explain." She sighed and crossed her arms. "I guess you could call me a manifestation of your memories, inner thoughts… conscience? Any one of those is accurate, really. And as for what you need to remember, well…" She walked closer to me with her hands outstretched. "You shall see, my dear." I eyed her warily and gasped lightly when her cool fingers touched my face. I felt myself crumble to the floor before I was plunged into darkness.

I stared at myself in the vanity mirror as I sat before it. My maid, Mira, was running a brush through my waist length pale blonde hair. I was not excited at all for today. I stared forlornly at my reflection for a few more moments before sighing.

"What is wrong, my lady?" Mira asked, pausing to replace the brush onto the vanity before starting to braid my hair.

"'Tis nothing, Mira," I answered, giving her a strained smile through the mirror.

"Aye, that may be so," Mira said, nodding with a smile. "But I must imagine that you are nervous about today. 'Tis no secret that Lord Dagianis' son, Lord Dareus, intends to ask for your hand today."

"Indeed," I retorted bitterly. This was all a sorry business that my father had gotten me into, for it was him that had talked Lord Dagianis into getting his son to marry me. Saying a marriage between our families would be 'beneficial for all'. I sighed inwardly. I did not want to marry Dareus, but I had no say in the matter. The thought left a bitter taste in my mouth and another heavy sigh escaped my lips.

"Begging your pardon, my lady, but…" Mira bit her bottom lip before continuing, "it appears that the thought of marrying him does not sit well with you."

A humorless laugh was my response. "You know me all too well, Mira." I balled my hands into fists in my lap, willing the tears away. "I do not know Lord Dareus, and that is… frightening."

Mira was silent for a few moments before she whispered a heartfelt apology. After she was finished with my hair, she stood and bowed before taking her leave. I continued to stare at my reflection for a while more. I reached my hands up to my ears and traced my fingers over the rounded tips. I was the only one in this land (as far as I know, anyway) that has rounded ears while everyone else had the delicately pointed hears known to Hylia's people. I was an oddity, a 'freak' as I had heard some people call me. I usually kept them hidden either under a cowl or my hair, too afraid of the whispers that gnawed away at me everywhere I go.

I was cursed. Cursed to be an oddity amongst my own people. With the ever familiar feeling of dejection sinking into the pit of my stomach, I wrapped a silken scarf around my head as a makeshift cowl and let the ends trail down my back to rest at the backs of my knees. A soft knock on the door made me jump slightly with a small gasp.

"Lady Zoey?" a male voice called from the other side of my door, one of the guards I guessed.

"You may enter," I called back, folding my hands neatly in my lap as the dark haired guard opened the door and bowed deeply.

"Lord Dagianis' escort is here to take you to his castle, my lady."

I inclined my head in his direction and stood. "Thank you for informing me, I shall be there shortly." The guard bowed deeply again and backed out of the room, shutting the door behind him.

Taking a few more minutes to steel myself, I took a deep breath and walked out of my room, heading towards the entrance. I passed a few guards and servants who bowed as I passed them by, but I didn't acknowledge them. I was focused on putting one foot in front of the other, embracing my fate and willing away the urge to run screaming in the other direction. I smirked lightly at the thought, thinking of the horrified faces of the guards and servants as I ran through the corridor screaming like death itself was hot on my heels.

"Zoey," a voice pulled me out of my thoughts and I paused, not bothering to look back the face of my father. I was still very much upset with him and would rather not have a confrontation with him.

"Yes, father?" I replied evenly, not wanting to speak with him this morning.

"I apologize, I won't be able to leave with you," he told me, "I have some things to finish up here in the castle. I will meet you at Lord Dagianis' castle tomorrow." I placed his hands on my arms and kissed my forehead. "Be safe, my daughter." He looked up and looked over my head at something behind me. "I trust you will keep my daughter safe?"

"Yes, my Lord," a deep voice replied behind me. "I shall protect her with my life."

"Who?" I slowly turned in my father's grip to look at the man behind me. My breath hitched in my throat when a pair of sky blue eyes met my own.

I gasped and sat up quickly, placing my hands over my chest. I took a shaky breath and ran my shaking hands over my face. I looked beside me to see if Matthew was still in his spot. He wasn't. In fact, this wasn't even my bed. Instead of my familiar lime green sheets, there was a heavy and rough blanket. My breathing was coming out in short panicked gasps as I looked around my unfamiliar surroundings? Had I been kidnapped? Oh Lord, where was Matthew?! I pushed the thick sheet away from my shaking body, noticing that I was still wearing the clothing that I had fallen asleep in at home.

"Oh God," I muttered, a knot forming in the pit of my stomach. The room was unfurnished, besides the bed and a small table next to it. The walls were painted a light beige color, with green and red strips close to the ceiling. The only light was from the candle on the table beside the bed, casting soft shadows around the room. I stared at the door when I heard voices conversing closer. I backed away from the door until my back hit the far opposite wall. I could hear the voices more clearly now, though muffled behind the door, a man and a woman.

"Link, slow down!" the woman exclaimed. "What is this all about?"

'Link?' I thought with confusion. 'As in 'The Legend of Zelda' Link?'

"I found a girl by the Statue of the Goddess, unconscious," the man said. The doorknob creaked a little as it turned and I pressed myself closer to the wall in apprehension. I sank to the floor and buried my face in my knees. The door opened and a grimaced, remaining in my tight ball on the floor.

"Oh," the man said. I looked up and my eyes widened when a pair of familiar blue eyes gazed at my own. I stared at the two figures in amazement. Zelda and Link from Skyward Sword were standing in the doorway, staring at me with wide curious eyes.

"Hello," the woman, Zelda, said reassuringly and walked into the room, "my name is Zelda, and this is Link." She stopped in front of me and sat on her knees. "What is your name?"

I didn't answer for a moment, still trying to process everything that was going on. "Zoey… My name's Zoey," I whispered. I uncurled myself and sat up straighter. "I have a question." They both nodded at me for me to continue. "Who found me?"

Link raised his hand. "I did," he answered with a small smile. "I found you by the Statue of the Goddess. Though, I'm curious to know how you wound up there, unconscious no less."

I paused before asking the one question that was burning in my mind. "Was there a… a baby with me?"

They both looked at each other before looking back at me. "No," Link shook his head. "No, there wasn't a baby. Why?"

I sighed in relief. He didn't appear here with me. He was at home. "No reason." I was silent for a few seconds. "Where am I?"

"The Knight Academy," Zelda answered with a smile. "You're in one of the spare girls dorm rooms."

"Oh…" There was a long awkward, at least for me, silence before someone spoke again.

"Are you hungry?" Zelda asked, rising to her feet.

"Famished." I put my hands over my stomach when it gave a low growl at the thought of food.

"I can imagine. Here." She held out a small bundle for me to take. "You can change into this. Link and I will be waiting for you in the hall." She bowed her head and left the room, followed by Link who paused to give me one more look before shutting the door behind him. I spread the bundle out on the bed to find that it was an ankle length, cream colored dress with a tan sash to tie around my waist. The fabric was a thick linen, it was a little scratchy but I could live with it. I folded my old clothes and laid them on the bed before exiting the room to join Link and Zelda in the hall.

Zelda clapped her hands together with a wide smile. "You look beautiful, Zoey!"

I felt my face heat up as I blushed. "T-thank you."

"Don't you think so, Link?" Zelda turned to the silent man beside her. He hadn't once taken his eyes away from me since I exited the room. I fidgeted under his gaze and the heat on my face spread down my neck as my blush worsened. "Link?" Zelda prodded him with a finger, trying to get a response from him.

"Yes," he answered, sounding dazed, "beautiful…"

Goosebumps started to rise on my arms and I rubbed absentmindedly at them. I averted my eyes away from Link and looked at the floor. "Thank you," I squeaked bashfully.

"Let's go, shall we?" Zelda grabbed me by my wrist and started down the hall. I tried to remember the way that we went so I could return to my room, but lost track after the fourth turn or so. The academy was much larger than the game made it seem. The smell of food grew stronger as we neared the kitchens. "How old are you, Zoey?"

"Huh? Oh! Um, I'm 16."

"Oh?" Zelda turned and smiled brightly at me. "Link and I are as well, though Link is half a year older." I could hear the pout in her voice when she said this and Link chuckled behind me. "After we eat, my father wishes to speak with you in his office. My father is Headmaster of the academy here."

When we entered the cafeteria the loud chatter of the students and the smells of the food hit me full force. The room was quite large with two long tables sitting side by side and a smaller round table I guessed was for the instructors. I recognized some of the students seated at the tables, but a lot of them I didn't. Though there were some whose designs I had only seen in the 'Hyrule Historia' book. I noticed that Karane (pronounced 'Kah-rain') and Pipit didn't have their uniforms yet and were wearing normal Skyloftian civvies. I saw Groose look up from his conversation with Cawlin ('Cow-lynn') and Strich ('Stritch') to look at Zelda. He looked at me in confusion before his face went red and he looked down quickly. The hell was that about?

"Here we are." Link pulled out a couple chairs for me and Zelda before leaving to get our plates.

"Hello, Zelda." We looked up to see Groose leaning on the table next to me. My eyes widened and I leaned away slightly, he was much too close to me for comfort. "And who is this beauty you have with you? I've never seen you around, are you new?"

"My name's Zoey and, um… could you back away a bit?"

He didn't seem to hear, or maybe he ignored, my request for him to back away and he remained where he was. "It's very nice to meet you, my lady. My name is Groose."

"Hey, leave her alone, Groose," Link growled when he returned, putting our plates on the table before turning to glare at the tall redhead.

"What you say, pipsqueak?" Groose narrowed his eyes at Link but he didn't back down.

"Enough!" I exclaimed and slammed my hands onto the table, causing every eye in the room to turn to me. "Please return to your seat, Groose." Groose gave Link one more glare before scoffing and returning to his seat with a huff. I sighed and looked down at my plate, the food was something that looked like a fruit salad and a glass of water.

"Sorry about him," Zelda said with a sheepish smile. "He can be—"

"A jerk?" I laughed lightly with a small smile, I picked up a grape and popped it into my mouth.

Zelda giggled. "I guess you could say that."

I looked up at Link who was tearing into his food angrily, glaring into the plate. I took that time to examine him further. Dark goldenrod hair hung over deep blue eyes. "Are you ok, Link?"

He looked up at me and his face softened. "Yeah," he replied softly. "It's just that… he irritates me sometimes."

"It's ok, Link," I told him. "Don't let him get to you. I'm too used to his type anyway." He smiled brightly at me in return, making me look down shyly and blush. I saw Zelda look from me to him a few times before she gave me a knowing grin.

After we finished eating and put our plates away, Zelda turned to Link. "I have to go do something, could you show her to father's office, Link?"

"Of course," he replied with a smile, not taking his eyes off of mine.

Zelda smirked at him before turning to me. "See you tomorrow, Zoey, goodnight."

"'Night." I watched her walk away quickly before turning to Link. "So…" I shifted from one foot to the other nervously.

"Let's get you to the Headmaster's office, shall we?" I nodded silently and followed him out of the cafeteria and down the hall towards the stairs. The door to his office was to our immediate right one we reached the top of the stairs. "Go on in, I'll be waiting for you out here."

"Thank you, Link."

"No problem."

I knocked on the door and went inside after a deep voice told me to enter. "Hello, Headmaster," I bowed my head in respect, "my name's Zoey. Zelda said you wished to speak with me?"

"Yes," the large man turned from the large window to face me. "Link told me that he found you at the Goddess Statue this morning. But what's more, he said it was like you appeared out of thin air!" He paused for a few moments before leaning forward. "Did you say that your name is 'Zoey'?" I nodded and he rushed to the bookshelf on the other side of the room and returned to his desk with a dusty tome. I was beyond confused about what was going on. After he found whatever he was looking for he read for a few minutes before looking up at me and back at the book.

"What is it?" I asked nervously. Without saying a word he spun the book around to face me and I took a close look. There on the left page of the book was a detailed portrait of a woman who looked just like me. She was obviously much older but the resemblance was remarkable. "Who is she?"

"Her name was Zoey," he told me, "the daughter of a lord from long ago. She was also the lover of the Goddesses chosen hero."

"L-lover?" I sat heavily onto the chair in front of the desk.

Gaepora ('Gey-pora') nodded. "She was also mentioned in the legends. It was mentioned that she would return to aid the Goddesses chosen hero reborn on his new quest." He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "So it seems that the legends are coming to pass, though no one knows the exact date for when these things happen."

"What does this mean for me?" I asked softly.

Gaepora shook his head. "That, my dear, you will have to find out for yourself." He stood and bowed his head. "It was nice meeting you, miss Zoey. Now, I believe that a young man is waiting out in the hall for you, yes?"

"Yeah Link."

He nodded and smiled. "Goodnight, Zoey."

"Goodnight, sir." When I walked out into the hall I found Link leaning against the railing, waiting for me. "Hey, Link, I'm ready to go to my room now."

"Alright, this way." He turned and continued down the hall. I stared at his back thoughtfully, thinking about the new information that I had learned. My past life, I don't know how that's possible since I'm from another… dimension or whatever, was the Link before this one's lover. I felt heat rush across my skin at the thought of being intimate with Link. I rubbed at the bumps rising on my arms and shivered. My eyes went over Link's form from behind, he was very muscular, but not too much so since he was still very thin. He was tall as well, at least a head taller than me and I felt very small in his presence. "Here's your room. Goodnight, Zoey."

"'Night, Link. Thank you for bringing me back."

"No problem, see you in the morning." I watched him disappear down the hall before retiring into the room. When I entered I saw a tan silk nightgown lying on my bed, courtesy of Zelda no doubt. After slipping into the nightgown I climbed into the bed and curled under the sheets. I blew out the candle and fell asleep thinking that this was all a dream and that I would be back home when I woke up.
