It was a wretched morning. Rain drizzled steadily on the dojo, and the sky was a miserable shade of grey. It was the kind of morning that made doing anything but sleep in seem ridiculous. The resident neko-jin found no reason not to comply; it was his birthday, after all. So it was about 12:45 P.M. before he rolled out of the bed he shared with Kai, mouth stretched wide in a prolonged yawn. Turns out, it wasn't such a good idea, due to the leak in the ceiling directly above him. He quickly spat out the water, and scrambled to another, drier space on the hard, wooden floor. He groaned. Not a good start to his special day. Kai would make it better though, wouldn't he? Hey, where was Kai? He looked around the bedroom. A chilly wooden floor, a closet, a large wooden dresser, and his oh-so-comfy and oh-so-empty bed greeted his roaming gaze. Nothing else. He glanced out the window. It was dark enough to be nighttime, and it was pouring. He got up, scowling in annoyance. "He didn't go out to train in this weather, did he?" the amber eyed youth muttered. "If he gets sick, I'll kill him…" He thought about getting dressed, but then, why should he? Pajama bottoms and a t-shirt were comfortable, and judging from the weather, he wasn't about to go anywhere. Walking towards the door, he noticed something he had failed to see before. A small sheet of paper, decorated with small, curvy handwriting. Black pen. Curious, he padded over to the bedside and examined it. What he read made his heart jump to his throat and warmth spread throughout his body.

Your laugh makes my heart stop,

And gives me a feeling nothing can top.

It makes me smile,

Just to know I'm worth your while.

When I hold your hand,

It gets hard to think or stand.

Every morning I'm eager to rise,

Just so I can see your eyes.

I will treasure your trust

Until I am but dust.

You are my best friend,

This will never end.

To The Birthday Boy

Rei stood there, frozen, messy raven hair hiding his smiling eyes. An appetizing scent drifted into his nose. Tyson and Max would still be comatose, so he had a pretty good idea of who had decided to cook the late breakfast. He smirked mischievously, and left the bedside. It was time to go give Kai a very special thank you for his birthday present.
