Mulder rolled over and looked at the clock, 3:03 am. He wiped the sleep form his eyes and looked over at a peacefully sleeping Scully. He reached over her and turned off the baby monitor from which irate cries sounded. He arose and stretched his back with his fists balled up above his head and let out a tedious yawn.
He felt his way through the dark into his son's room and scooped the yelling infant up from out of his crib. He wandered into the kitchen and heated up a bottle of formula and plopped onto the couch. William drank furiously making little grunts as he swallowed. Mulder took the end of his shirt and wiped the milky drool from his chin. More cries.
Mulder helplessly offered him his bottle but he refused. He held him above his head and sniffed at his bum. Just the smell of baby powder and desitin. "What's wrong big guy?" Mulder cooed. "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" William responded. Mulder stood with him and walked over to the fish tank. The crying subsided. William reached out his hand and patted the glass making happy squealing noises.
Mulder patted his back as he'd seen Scully do, and William released a colossal burp. "Ah-ha!" Mulder said victoriously. "That's why you were so mad, huh?" William leaned his head against Mulder's chest and slowly closed his eyes as Mulder rubbed his back. The moonlight shone dimly through the window dancing on the walls of the family room as the trees swayed in a rhythmic rustle outside. Mulder lowered himself on to the couch and William let out his cries of protest.
Mulder stood again and swayed in sync with the shadows on the wall. William closed his eyes again and buried his face into Mulder's shoulder. He waited several moments to ensure he was asleep before he sat back down. William rubbed his face Mulder's collar bone but did not wake.
Scully awoke when she rolled over to Mulder's side of the bed and found no warm body to welcome her. 4:15 am the red digits read. She walked out into the family room where she discovered Mulder with his feet propped up on the coffee table, his head hung over the back of the couch and William embedded into his left side, both sound asleep.
She stood for a moment absorbing the sight, imprinting it into her mind forever. She couldn't recall ever feeling as happy or content as she did as this moment. Warm tears flooded her eyes and she let out a quiet laugh. She picked up a blanket and snuggled up to Mulder's right side and placed his arm around her. She covered the three of them up and exhaled peacefully. She closed her eyes to meet them again in her dreams.
