Daria sat at the cold wooden desk, nervous for the first day of history class at James Woods Regional High School. To her left sat a chubby girl wearing glasses and a matching pink shirt and beanie, to her right sat a blonde cheerleader dressed in her red cheer outfit.

Her history teacher, Mr. Berler, started writing on the blackboard, "The Canadian-American War." The cheerleader started snickering at Daria and the girl to her left, and Mr. Berler turned toward the three girls.

"Meg, leave Connie alone," he said. "Do I have to give you detention again?"

"I didn't do anything," said the girl in the glasses.

"Shut up, Meg," said Mr. Berler, and resumed teaching.

"How can you let them treat you that way?" asked Daria. She raised her hand. "Mr. Berler, Meg really didn't do anything."

Mr. Berler looked bewildered. "How can someone stand up for Meg?" he asked. "New girl, I don't know how they behave in Highland, but here in Quahog, it's against the law to stand up for Meg."

Connie then gave Meg a wedgie and everyone else laughed except for Daria.

"I'm going to show all these idiots this school that Meg is worth treating with respect," said Daria.
