And finally it was Saturday. The day she had been praying for and dreading at the same time.
Peggy put on her favorite blue dress, and her best dancing shoes.
She fixed her hair and makeup in the mirror as the tears streamed slowly down her face.
She checked how she looked one final time before taking her purse and leaving.
What am I doing, she thought to herself.
She was utterly silent as she made her way to the Stork Club. By the time she got there, it was only 7:49.
11 minutes, she thought. 11 minutes until we said we would meet.
The time passed slowly until the clock on the wall finally struck 8:00. She looked toward the door, hoping with every ounce of her heart that it would open to reveal Steve, nervous as ever, and ready to learn how to dance.
Her heart sank more in her chest with each passing moment, as the seconds on the clock ticked by.
She looked around to see if he had shown up early and she had simply missed him. She glanced around frantically but did not see Steve anywhere.
Don't pretend like you're surprised that he's not here.
She looked down in agony, trying to stop the tears from falling.
Suddenly, the door to the club opened and Peggy's head jerked up to look.
"I knew you'd be here," to Peggy's utter dismay, it was Howard Stark, not Steve. "When you told me what happened, I knew you were still planning on coming," he said. Peggy looked down sadly. "You shouldn't have come, you knew this would only hurt you."
"How could I have stayed home tonight, Howard?" Peggy exclaimed. "I know I'm crazy for believing he would show, but you don't understand! H-he swore he wouldn't be late." She choked out sobs through her words. "He promised he would be here tonight. W-We never had a chance to dance together."
