"We should have expected this, really," she says, as her tiny body lay on his shaking arms. "That on the day I eat an apple, the doctor isn't 'kept away'. Not that he'd get here before—"
"Shut up."
She chuckles and continues, "Well, we could say the doctor is being 'kept away' at this moment… so I suppose the rhyme remains true."
"Really, you pick this moment to be all— You're impossible."
"Or, perhaps, I'm the doctor? Since you ate one as well, that must be it…" her eyes flutter close—
"Haibara!" he shakes her with one arm, "No!" and he puts a little bit more pressure on her wound with the other, "Open your eyes, you idiot!"
She opens her eyes with obvious difficulty, and tries to speak in a light tone, "There's only one idiot here, and it's the one with snot all over his face—"
"Shut up, and won't you just save your energy for something worthwhile like, I don't know, staying alive?
"The only idiot in this room is already doing that for me, so…"
"So you know, then won't you please help me out a little here?!"
"And so the great Detective of the East admits he's an idiot," she smirks triumphantly.
"Geez, Haibara, we're—"
She silences him with a finger on his lips, and with the same hand, she wipes his tears.
"Kudo-kun, thank you," her smirk softens into a smile and her eyes shine a little.
His eyes widen. He clutches her hand tight and presses it against his cheek.
Her eyes close.
"Oi, Haibara! Just stay awake will you?! Fine, don't shut up, just stay awake!"
"Yes, yes, detective," she mouths.
But she can't force her eyes open anymore.
