Linger
In the bottom of her closet is a white dress shirt with a smudged lipstick stain on the collar. She sees it every laundry day but ignores it. Every once in a while she pulls it out to remind her of what she lost. How she lost what she should have never had in the first place. It reminds her of when she was happy, and it reminds her that she may never be in that place again.
It's been almost two years since she and Jack ended their affair. Two years since they just stopped sleeping together. It would be easier if she didn't have to see him every day, to hear him laugh on the phone with his girls, to see the picture of his family on his desk. But she does and she lives with it.
She tries to move on. She dates doctors and cops who are only available when she wants them to be. She starts to call Keller one night, when she remembers that he works in Pennsylvania now. He's probably moved on with a blond who has two cats.
She catches Martin looking at her out of the corner of his eye. He did that when he first joined the team and then stopped one day. But since she helped him find his aunt, he's been doing it again. She thinks it's nice to be wanted and that maybe the next time he asks her out she'll accept. She'd hate to get a rep as the office hussy, but she can't live like a nun for the rest of her life. And Martin is the only one showing interest.
Jack isn't going to leave his wife for her, and even if he did, who is to say that he won't do the same thing to her one day? Cheaters don't change their spots.
In the back of her closet is a white dress shirt with a smudged lipstick stain on the collar. She pulls it out one night to remind her of what she used to have. She puts it back in the closet and hopes Martin doesn't see it. She keeps it to have a reminder of him. And giving it back to him would be one more sign that is truly over.
