Summer was just too damn hot.

He pouted as he stared up at the sky, using a hand to shade his bright blue eyes from the sun. He hated waiting for her in the summer. He shouldn't have worn his sweatshirt today, but he couldn't leave to go bring it home and then come back. She'd be mad if he wasn't there when she arrived, which is why he was here five minutes early in the first place.

Naruto let a sigh escape his lips, looking down the length of the bridge again in the direction his girl was supposed to come from. A goofy grin came to his face.

Yeah, Sakura was his girl now. And it was great.

"Hey, you're here!" She appeared without him truly realizing it. Her short pink hair blew slightly in the light breeze, framing her smiling face nicely.

"Of course I'm here, where else would I be?" he asked, leaning in for a kiss.

She leaned away, avoiding it. "Nuh-uh, that's not how it works."

He frowned, utterly confused. "What? Not how what works?"

Sakura glanced around as a light blush crept to her cheeks. "You can't just kiss me like that..."

"But whyyyy?" he whined, blonde hair seeming to droop with disappointment.

"Because!" she insisted. She grabbed his hand with her gloved one. "C'mon, let's get out of here."

It was a few minutes later when they stopped at an empty training ground. She turned around suddenly and kissed Naruto very lightly on the lips, almost hesitantly.

"Why couldn't I kiss you before?" he asked, completely oblivious.

She released his hand, hugging herself around the waist as she looked away and shrugged. "I'm just... Not really used to it yet."

"Whaddaya mean?"

"The whole 'us' thing," Sakura clarified, looking at him again with bright green eyes. "I never ever thought I'd end up with you, so kissing you where anyone could see is almost... Embarrassing."

Naruto frowned deeply, offended. "Embarrassing? Seriously?"

"No, no, not the fact that it's with you!" she quickly said, holding out her palms toward him and waving her arms to try and dispel the accidental offense. She sighed. "Even if it was someone else it would be that way."

The blonde thought for a few moments, trying to process what was going through her mind. Eventually he decided that girls were kind of strange to think like that, but apparently she was upset. He reached out and pulled her into a hug, which – much to his pleasure – she returned. "I'm sorry," he said. Wasn't that always the right thing to say when a girl was upset?

"It's not your fault," she assured him, shaking her head slightly against his chest.

There was silence for a few moments as they stood there in each other's arms. It was an awkward silence, the silence you could sometimes experience on a first date. Not that this was a date, they were supposed to be training. They didn't go out on dates yet.

"... So can I kiss you now?" Naruto asked, hopeful.

Sakura pulled away enough to look at him, a small smile on her face. "Yeah, I guess you can."

He grinned, laughing softly for a moment before leaning down and kissing her as well as he knew how, which wasn't that good, but it wasn't like either of them had had much practice.

But it was summer, so it was just too damn hot for either of them to really care.
