WARD IS HYDRA, the picture mirror thing said in jagged lettering, cut into the picture instead of written on it.
Everyone else seemed to agree without seeing that it's a lie. What if Skye is HYDRA?
Obviously, Fitz doesn't think that, but still. Ward sure as hell isn't HYDRA and Skye has no place trying to accuse him.
He won't accept it. He can't, not when Ward has been so... there for him, in ways none of the others have been.
When Jemma told them that whoever killed the only other agent there was taller and stronger, he kicked the nearest thing he could. How could he have not seen it?
And when the others all agree that he is HYDRA, that he is not turning back, Fitz won't do it.
Okay, Ward might be HYDRA - might.
Ward may be HYDRA, but Fitz will not give up on him. He has to believe that Ward can still be the man they all thought he was.
Ward tells them, in no specific words, that he cares about them - right before he drops them into the ocean.
And Jemma has to get out of there alive, so Fitz lets her have the oxygen.
He also tells her that he has feelings for her, which maybe he shouldn't do, but he's going to die, probably, and he has to get it out.
Fitz remembers water rushing up to him and Jemma grabbing his hand.
He remembers when he first met Ward.
How could he have not seen it?
