This is meant to be a small surprise holiday gift for Rosa Cotton. She's been such a doll :)
Christmastime somehow touched little Wendy Darling's heart like never before.
Once upon a time, she was not one to enjoy winter. She didn't like the slippery paths lined up behind the houses, hated the cold, and became peeved about how the icy winds always nipped at her cheeks, turning them red in all the wrong ways. She typically preferred to curl her bare toes in white sandy beaches instead, with the summer sun beaming down on her chocolate curls, while hearing birds and pipes somewhere in the distance.
But this season, it was different. She could feel its wonder hanging in the air now, which had little to do with the new dresses she received or the other various treats and trinkets all the boys were constantly fawned over. It was more than that.
Even though she had essentially agreed to move out of the nursery and into her lady's room months ago, on free will, Wendy still had grown more and more sensitive to those forces living beyond adult's imagination. And for some reason, she realized magic's pull was getting stronger and stronger this time of year...whether it was rooted to the children laughing around a decorated tree, or just everybody's Christmas spirit in general, Wendy couldn't say exactly.
But, after the family celebrations ended and their caroling faded away with the day hours, midnight soon approached London City.
Happily, yet very leisurely and quietly, Wendy slid from her bed covers, smoothing out her nightgown as she made her way through her door. She continued on from there, tiptoeing down the dim corridors of the Darling home, reaching for her blue knitted shall which hung on the nearby wall, finally coming upon the side-entry located in the kitchens.
Wrapping herself up, Wendy tugged on her slippers and almost had her hand laid on the handle, when a low moaning sound stopped her.
She gulped and turned around to find Nana awake and standing paces from her, looking rather watchful.
"Nana," she breathed, "you startled me."
The canine dressed in a maid's bonnet growled softly once again in a certain sort of warning.
"Oh, hush, Nana. I am only going out for a moment."
In reply, Nana sat on her haunches where she was, completely resolute, meaning to express the words: I'll make sure you get in safely, then.
Nodding, Wendy sighed in contentment and carefully slipped between the gap she made with this wooden door and its cracking frame.
Her slippers weren't much to shelter her naked heels from the sudden drop in temperature, but at least the nightly breeze was standing still for now and the snow began to fall around her ever so peacefully.
And Wendy lingered in their small stone courtyard, head lifted up to gaze at the clear skies above, blue eyes glistening with ideas of flight and wild adventure.
A delicate smile curved in the corner her of her lips.
The Never Star, second one on the right, actually seemed to grow brighter the longer she watched it, as if it knew she was there...as if it was watching her too.
A part of her naturally wished Peter was with them now, reveling in the holiday feasts with them, experiencing the joy of gift-giving with the entire family.
Though Wendy still appreciated the memory of him—always would.
For Peter had given her the gift of magic.
Sorry it turned out to be so short. It honestly looked longer written on paper lol.
