James Potter, his girlfriend Lily Evans and his friends Sirius Black and Remus Lupin were all sitting around in the living room of Sirius' apartment, looking slightly awkward.
"So..." ventured James tentatively, trying to diffuse the awkwardness.
"So.." echoed Lily thoughtfully.
"You know, you'd think by age twenty, you'd learn how to throw a party, Sirius," remarked Remus dryly.
Sirius looked highly offended. "For your information, Moony, it's not a party. It's - er -an intimate - er - get-together...yeah..."
"Yeah," echoed James supportively.
"Yeah," repeated Sirius, grinning.
"Ye-" James began enthusiastically.
"Oh, shut up, you two," Lily interrupted, slightly crossly. "You know, me and the girls were going to have a night out together...I can't believe I opted for this -" she motioned around contemptuously - "instead."
James looked over at her teasingly, his hazel eyes twinkling. "Oh, come on, Lils. You wouldn't rather go out with some friends than spend a whole night with me, right?"
Lily rolled her eyes. "Seriously, Potter, why did I ever agree to date you?"
"Why, Evans, it's because I'm devilishly handsome and have a winning personality to boot and - "
"Not to mention a giant fat head."
Sirius and Remus laughed, and James joined in after a moment of looking slightly put-out. "Ah, good memories of fifth year, eh, Evans?" he said.
"Alright, you can call me Lily now, we've been dating three years now," she said, smiling in spite of herself.
"No, you know what?" said James seriously. "I don't really like your name. It's kind of ugly."
Lily looked quite offended and Remus snorted. "Real smooth, James," he said.
Sirius, on the other hand, just nodded vigorously. "He's right, he's right. Go on, James." Lily shot an annoyed look at him.
"Yeah, no, I'm serious here - no, shut up, Sirius -" (Sirius had just opened his mouth to say, 'No, I'm Sirius') " - I reckon it'd sound a lot better with, say, a 'Potter' tacked at the end of it."
"What are you trying to say?" Lily asked, oblivious.
"Well, I'd say it's pretty obvious, Lily."
"Er - " A look of sudden comprehension dawned on her face. "Are you trying to ask me to - ?"
"Yeah," said James, pleased that she'd finally caught on.
"Wait!" interjected Sirius. "Shouldn't you get down on one knee first?"
"Er - should I? Is that what you're supposed to do?" asked James doubtfully.
"Yes, you dolt."
"Well, how was I supposed to know? It's not like I've done this before!" But he listened to Sirius and knelt in front of Lily who was watching the proceedings with some amusement.
"Alright then. Lily, will you marry me?"
Lily smiled and blushed in spite of herself. "Well, yes -" Sirius whooped and James looked like he was struggling to contain himself as well. Lily shot Sirius as dirty a look as she could muster under the circumstances (which, truth be told, wasn't very dirty at all) and continued, "- but shouldn't you have a ring?"
"A ri - right, right, I should have it..."
James rooted through his pockets worriedly. "Er - Remus - you wouldn't have happened to see a ring anywhere, by any chance, maybe?"
Remus snorted. "Good Lord, James. You're going to make a real fabulous husband, aren't you?"
Lily looked at him in a flat kind of amazement. "You lost your ring?"
"No - er - it's still - getting...made?"
"Don't worry, you idiot, I've got you covered," said Remus, who conjured a ring and handed it to James.
"Thanks, mate, you're a lifesaver...anyways, here Lily." He handed her the ring and sat back down next to her.
"Phew. That's a lot harder than it looks."
Lily opened her mouth to say something but stopped. "Good enough," she smiled.
Just a bit of L/J fluffiness. If you liked it, please please review. If you didn't, tell me why...in a review. Thanks!
