Summary: What really happened while Jean was recovering from his wounds…
"Jean…"
Armin was crying again and Jean sighed. He didn't like seeing Armin cry. He sat up slowly on the bed wincing a little in pain.
"Stop crying."
"B-But!"
Jean pinched Armin's cheeks together.
"Please."
Jean's gaze was gentle as he patted Armin's head.
"If you weren't there, I would have been dead, so stop crying."
Armin nodded. His gaze still traveled up and down Jean's injured body. It was covered in black and blue bruises, scratches, and dried blood. It was a traumatic sight even after the worst had been cleaned off. Armin was ashamed that he was powerless to help Jean at the time. All the knowledge in the world was useless if he didn't have the strength to put that knowledge into action. Armin stared at the floor.
Jean knew that Armin was beating himself up, and for no good reason at that. Jean sighed and pulled Armin's hand to his heart.
"I'm still alive, that's all that matters."
Armin's face flushed crimson and he quickly pulled his hand away. For some reason, Jean felt kind of hurt that Armin had pulled away so quickly. Jean looked away.
"Sorry…" He muttered.
Armin looked at Jean in shock. Did he just hurt his feelings? Oh god, on top of causing him physical pain, he had hurt his feelings as well. As much as Armin liked Jean, all he ever did was allow him to get hurt. Armin was determined to change. He reached out and hugged Jean. His heart thumping wildly in his chest and his body temperature rising.
"Don't be, it's okay."
Jean closed his eyes. It was so nice to feel his arms wrapped around him. Jean smiled, maybe he had some hope after all.
"Armin."
"Hm?"
Armin breathed against his chest.
"I like you a lot."
Armin pulled back again with wide eyes.
"I have for a while, and I was so happy that you saved me. I really do like you a lot… it's more than as a friend… I- I love you."
Jean's words washed over Armin like a tidal wave. They were everything he had ever wanted to hear and more. Armin was at a loss for words and Jean took that as a sign that maybe he was wrong, Armin didn't love him. His eyes began to water but he refused to cry, not in front of Armin. He would not be weak in front of the person he loves.
"Armin?"
"…."
Jean sighed in disappointment and spoke in a sad small voice.
"I'm sorry… if you're mad or disgusted, I'll just go away or something."
Jean struggled to stand from the bed and began to fall. Armin caught him and set him back on the bed.
"No. Don't go Jean."
Jean's brown eyes snapped towards Armin's blue ones.
"Why? You don't like me right?"
Jean's voice was beginning to wobble slightly and he cursed himself for being so damn sensitive. Armin placed a hand on Jean's cheek and smiled.
"Of course I do."
Jean had sworn that his heart stopped. He silently begged the gods to let Armin like him, even if it was just a little bit. The hand on his cheek was so warm and Jean loved it.
"I love you Jean."
Armin leaned in and pressed his lips to Jean's. Jean couldn't think, he felt like he was dreaming. When he pulled back to breathe, he smiled. Armin's thumb brushed his cheek. Jean covered Armin's hand with his own and kissed the open palm. Somehow, Armin was here still and he had told him he loved him. The joy was overwhelming. He lay back down on the bed and pulled Armin down with him. He nuzzled Armin's face with his nose and kissed him constantly.
Armin lay there in content, really glad that he was able to make Jean feel so happy and loved. Their mutual feelings finally being put into action and words made Armin want to cry tears of joy. The only thought on Armin's mind was that if Jean was happy, then so was he.
