A/N: This is my first fanfic for my new account! I hope it turns out well.
This is the story of how I died. I'm kidding, it's actually a happy story and isn't even mine. This is the story of a girl named Catalina, and it all starts with a flower. A long time ago, a marigold bloomed in a place that people had known was connected to the gods. Because of this, the flower had the ability to heal people that were sick or hurt.
Suddenly, an old woman with dark hair walked to the flower with a lantern and kneeled down in front of it.
That woman over there? Keep her in mind, she's very important. Anyway, a couple hundred years pass, and a city is built, San Angel, and it was protected by the two famous soldiers Alicia and Lazaro Mondragon. Alicia, however, was going to have a child, but she got very sick. Soon, the townspeople started to look for miracles, or magic flowers.
Meanwhile, the woman had returned to the magic flower, looking as old as she did last time. She sat down, and took off her red cloak.
Aha, you see? I told you she was important. This woman, Mama Catrina, used the magic of this flower to keep herself young forever. All she needed to do was sing a special song.
"Flower gleam and glow, let your power shine. Make the clock reverse. Bring back what once was mine." She suddenly turned young and beautiful. "What once was mine."
You get it, she sings, she turns young, creepy, isn't it?
Just as she finished singing, citizens of San Angel ran towards the flower and put it in a pot.
The powers of the marigold healed Alicia, and her daughter was born. Catalina. To celebrate her, her family and the townspeople lit candles and set them on their windows. Everything was perfect. But not for long. It wasn't long before Mama Catrina had broken in and stole the baby girl. She disappeared, and the people had no way to find her. But, far away from the city, she locked Catalina in a tower and raised her as her own daughter.
"Save what has been lost. Bring back what once was mine, what once was mine." Just like before, Catrina had turned young when Catalina sang to her. "Mama, can I please go outside?"
"I'm sorry, mija, but no. The outside world is very dangerous, filled with people that will take you from me. Do you understand?"
"Yes Mama."
Fortunately, that tower couldn't keep Catalina from her curiosity, because every year on her birthday the people of San Angel sent lanterns into the sky, with the hope that she would find her way home.
