Man's Best Friend
The age old story of a boy and his dog.
Introduction:
There once was a daring, young child,
Whose life was simple and free.
His sibling was grown,
So he lived alone,
With his parents who dwelled by the sea.
He would've been bored all day and all night,
If it weren't for one little thing.
Redbeard, his best friend,
Whom he loved to no end,
Made his life a lot more interesting.
His puppy with fur as red as a flame,
And a tail that wagged with pure joy.
Eyes oh-so-blue,
Wild through and through.
He seemed to be made for his boy…
The boy woke up cheerful and eager,
He would go to his friend's home to play.
He got up, he got dressed.
Held his bear to his chest,
Yelling "Bye!" to his pup on the way.
When he and his teddy were out of the house,
The canine sat down on the floor.
He waited and waited.
Not an ounce of gloom faded,
'Til his master came straight through the door.
The child was grinning, breathless and pleased,
As he told of his day to his hound.
Though what Redbeard saw,
Made him stiffen his jaw;
The boy's bear was nowhere to be found…
The child knew it was his bedtime,
His mother had made that quite clear.
But his puppy was gone,
And though he did yawn,
He couldn't sleep 'til his furball was near.
He was looking and searching in panic, despair,
He left the house, bringing a chain.
The boy's mom watched him pace,
A sad look on her face,
As he shouted and called his pup's name.
Some time later, his hope seemed to sputter and die,
Like an engine beginning to stall.
Then the mischievous light,
In his eyes turned to night.
There was nothing inside him at all…
The child was thoroughly nauseous,
As he laid in despair on the grass.
He stared up at the sky,
Trying not to cry,
But the heartache and grief wouldn't pass.
And strive as he might to keep it inside,
As awareness began to advance,
The pain in his heart,
Was tearing him apart,
And the tears made the lights seem to dance.
He then felt a tease of fur on his lap.
The sight both amusing and sweet;
A grin to his jaw,
Teddy under his paw,
Was Redbeard expecting a treat.
It happened on that sweet spring night,
Emotions reach a new height.
And for years ever after,
Through tear and through laughter,
Two species forever unite.
A.N. This is another poem I wrote dedicated to Sherlock. I figured I'd write a story that could have happened, but had nothing to do with the show's plot, this time. (YES, I know Redbeard actually turned out to be a human, but in my mind, Redbeard is still an adorable pup, okay?) And, actually, I made a few modifications on this and submitted it to my school's newspaper and it got published. I just basically changed "Redbeard" to "Madeye". Same basic name platform: an adjective and a noun (in this case it was a body part)... Also, it reminded me of Harry Potter so... Thank you so much to LookAgain for the encouragement. It really means a lot. I hope you enjoyed and if you have any suggestions for other stories, just let me know.
