Sam was too busy reading he didn't here Jess enter his room. She came up to his desk and looked at his computer screen. "Whatcha doing?" she asked.
"I'm just reading."
"Can you read it to me?"
"No, It's kind of for grown ups."
"Is it bad?"
"No, just kinda scary."
"What is it about?"
"Zombies."
"What is a zombie?"
"They are um… well, monsters."
"Like vampires?"
"Yes. Like vampires. Except they don't have sharp teeth and they eat brains not blood."
"Brain is in the head, right?" Jess asked pointing at her temple.
"Yes," Sam smiled. "That's where it is."
"What do zombies look like?"
"Well," his brain raced trying to figure out how to describe them without using adjectives like 'decay' and 'rotting' and other words like that that would get him into trouble later with Rachel. "Well, they are green, with purple hair, black eyes, and they have big yellow teeth." He was sure he had seen many cartoons with them looking like that.
Jess stood there for a moment with her finger to her lip trying to picture it. Without a word she ran off leaving the door open behind her. Sam went back to his computer and resumed reading. A few moments later Jess came back in, this time with her box of crayons and some blank papers. She lay down in the middle of the floor and started working on a new picture. It was quiet with both of them working, besides keys clicking and Jess humming quietly to herself. Half a page down, she suddenly stopped and spoke up. "What do brains look like?"
"Uh…" He wasn't sure how to describe it to a small child. "Hold on a sec." He looked up some images. "Like this," he enlarged a simple cartoon one and tilted the computer so she could see.
"Oh!" She sounded like it was obvious and went back to work.
He closed the web browser and continued on with his research with Jess humming again behind him. After a good run he found he was just glancing through the same line over and over. There was nothing really new in the article that Sam found the least bit useful.
Finished, Jess stood up and proudly presented her art to him. It was a big green humanoid blob she always depicted people as with claws on his sides, two black eyes, and purple scribbles along its top for hair. Its mouth took up most of its body with a pink blob of a brain between its blocky yellow teeth. She also added some blue sky around it with some stairs and a white moon.
"Yep, that's a zombie!" Sam laughed.
"Do you like it?"
"It's perfect." He hugged her and gave her a kiss on the top of her head. "And I think I have just the spot for it."
She handed it over as he pulled out some double sided tape from a drawer. He stuck a piece on each back corner and pressed it against the wall next to the faded Winchester family photo.
"I'm gonna draw a vampire now," Jess said excitedly. "Those are purple right?"
