A button was pressed hastily on the band around his wrist, and it was, without the chance to rethink his action, a blur of nothingness lasting under a second before his shoes made contact with the ground again. He moved his hand away from the vortex-manipulator and let it rest by his side. Looking down at his boots, he was standing on a snowy hill, tufts of grass pushing up towards the sky: blue like he had never witnessed before. He began to let his gaze drift upwards, and Captain Jack Harkness's face was a riddle of frustration and surprise, his eyebrows and face muscles twisted in the same manner that was normal whenever the manipulator misfired. He seemed to be on the lands of a gigantic castle structure, impressive, he thought, VERY impressive. But no Camelot…

A small hut was a few hundred meters to his right, and a tree beyond that, its branches thrashing violently in what could have been described as a breeze. Suddenly, to his left, a group of three teenagers was walking up the hill towards the castle; the one girl was in tears.
However this still gave Jack no further clues of his whereabouts. He began to jog up to them, the snow crunching under his feet alerting the group, who then turned their heads to face him. One of them, with shock of red hair, pulled out a wand from a pocket of his robes.

"Wait," he shouted loud enough that they could hear, not so loud that they might be threatened, "Its ok! I was just wondering if you guys could help me? I, um…" he glanced at the vortex manipulation on his wrist and than continued," I'm quite lost. Where am I?" The children looked at each other, and a boy opened his mouth to speak. His glasses and jet-black hair were what struck him most at first.

"Why are you here? This is Hogwarts."

"Hogwarts." The captain echoed. He glared back at his vortex manipulator and furiously tapped at it. "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry?" he continued, his eyes fixed on his arm.
"Exactly", Ronald Weasly said, puzzled, as Hermione sobbed hopelessly at his shoulder, the redhead clearly not enjoying the awkwardness of the experience.
"What's the matter?" asked Jack, his American accent a strong contrast against the perfect English dialects of the three teenagers, turning his head to the girl displaying cascades of rich brown hair.

She explained through tears and intermittent yelps of dismay, Captain Jack listening patiently, his arms crossed, nodding or tutting occasionally to demonstrate his involvement. By the time she had finished, he was displaying quite a look of pride on his face, and this could be explained by his sentence: "I think I can help." He pulled the black band off his arm and handed it to Hermione. "This here is a vortex manipulator. Given the right directions it can take you anywhere in time and space. Use it to your will, but carefully: dangerous stuff, vortex manipulators!"
"Thank you ever so much-but this will never do…" She pulled another wand put of her pocket, an elegant piece of equipment, and waved at it, uttering a sentence under her breath.
"But that will reduce its capabilities!", snapped the Captain.
"Oh shush!" said she, and when he looked back down at his vortex manipulator, it had transformed into more of a pendant, intricate moving parts within each other, glass and gold and silver hovering, it appeared, around a tiny hourglass, creating what Hermione labelled as her new "time turner!"

Captain Jack Harkness drew out a phone and held it to his ear, watching as the trio walked away in the direction of their school, Hermione holding the time turner up in front of her face, and admiring it, occasionally trusting it into the direct view of the others so that they also could marvel at it. When whoever he was calling picked up, he sighed and muttered apologetically, "Doctor? Yeah I need a lift."
