To Be An Alchemist's Pocket Watch
As a State Alchemist's constant companion, the silver pocket watches they carried saw nearly as much action as the soldiers they accompanied. Each certainly had as many scars and dents, and each had developed its own character shaped by its experience. Everyone knew Ed's watch by the engraved words "Don't Forget- 3 Oct. 1910", both a scar and a promise, unique to that watch. The glass which encased the Roman numerals had distinctive chips and scratches, each telling a story no other pocket watch could ever quite match. One of which told us of being attacked by a certain "paperboy" calling him certain names which will NOT be repeated, in a specific small town, plagued with certain "zombies". A different one told the tale of when he smashed his watch with his hip when he slipped as he was walking on top of a moving train. A third spoke of a time he was taken by surprise by a certain bastard Colonel during a certain battle assessment test. The chain's links were twisted askew, representing many struggles for truth, self, self-acceptance, life and death, and fiercely defending a brother.
Roy's watch told many stories as well, some very similar, though none quite the same. His too bore scars from Ed's battle assessment, but in different places and for different reasons. Unlike Ed's, however, his bore scars from Ishbal, painful reminders of mistakes he made and sins he committed. As the dent near the top next to the chain loop could attest to though, some dents were made in moments of happiness; that dent happened as it sat in Roy's trousers pocket, his trousers hastily forgotten and tossed aside (probably hitting the corner of the bedstead) in the overwhelming presence of his young lover.
Like the scars of a person, the scars of a pocket watch told many stories, and whether they were happy or sad, won in love or in battle, the stories were always good.
