A/N: Me and my friends got in a big discussion about Totoro so I told them I'd write a fanfiction about it. This isn't my usual kinda thing, but I'm going to give it a shot! Please don't hate me if they are out of character, I only saw the movie once. Also, this is many years later, so they aren't kids any more. Just so you know.

Disclaimer: I do not own My Neighbour Totoro or any of the characters. They were created by our beloved Hayao Miyazaki.

Satsuki Kusakabe sat by the front door of the house. Mei had gone into town to pick up some groceries for that evening. Satsuki had taken the day off work. She needed some time to sit at home and relax.

Mei and Satsuki had inherited the house when their mother passed away and their father moved on. They had been happily living there for quite some time. They had promised each other they would continue living in that house as long as they lived. It was a magical place, and they dared not leave.

Satsuki looked into the nearby woods. She had caught sight of chibi Totoro earlier that day. It had been months since they saw any of the creatures. They didn't seem to appear as much as they did when Satsuki and Mei were children. It almost seemed like they were fading away.

"Satsuki!" cried a voice. Satsuki turned to see Kanta approaching. He carried a small basket filled with vegetables. Satsuki gestured for him to come closer.

Kanta stumbled along the path until he reached Satsuki. He held out the basket to her. Memories of the past flashed before Satsuki's eyes of young Kanta holding out his umbrella to her.

"We picked these vegetables yesterday," said Kanta, "I thought you would like to have them."

Satsuki smiled, "I just sent Mei out to get some groceries."

"Well," said Kanta, "I guess you'll have a few extra then. Just so you know, I think our vegetables are a bit tastier than the markets."

Satsuki laughed. The took the basket from Kanta and he took a seat next to her.

"So, how are things lately?" he asked.

"It's alright," replied Satsuki, "Things have been a little dreary around here. This place isn't as magical as it once was."

"What do you mean?"

"You'd never believe me if I told you."

"Oh, I'll believe anything you say Satsuki," said Kanta.

Satsuki laughed. She pointed upwards towards the Totoro Tree. "You see that tree?" she asked, "That's were the magical creature's live. Mei calls them totoros. Chibi Totoro, Chu Totoro and Ō Totoro. They've been here for a very long time. My father once referred to them as spirits. I don't even know any more truthfully. I'm not even sure if they really exist. Is it possible they only exist in me and Mai's minds?"

Kanta shook his head. "Of course they exist, Satsuki. As long as you believe that they do, they will always exist."

Satsuki smiled. She gently kissed Kanta on the cheek. "Thank you," she whispered.

Satsuki looked into the basket of vegetables. At the very top sat a cob of corn still wrapped up in leaves. She took it out and slowly tore at it until the bright yellow colour was revealed.

Satsuki felt something drop down onto her foot. She bent over to find something glittering in the grass. A glittering golden ring laid at her feet. A chorus of whistled suddenly filled the air. Satsuki looked upwards to find each of the totoros standing before her, whistling a happy tune.

Satsuki began to laugh. She clutched the ring in her hand and happily watched the totoros. She turned her head towards Kanta to find him bending down in the grass. Tears began falling down Satsuki's face.

"Yes," she sobbed. "A million times yes."

The whistles of the totoros echoed through the wind. They would never again be forgotten.
