A midnight conversation
Something was bothering Heero. He had been trying to get some sleep and kept turning around. He turned slowly towards Duo who was sleeping in the second bed and looked at him. He was facing the wall, the blanket hanging to his hips and the moonlight only just bright enough for Heero to see the mouvement of his breathing. The paleness of his skin contrasted with the fuzzy chestnut braid sneaking over his side. Heero sighed; was he sleeping? For once, he felt like talking, and the american was unavailable. It was almost midnight. Duo turned around and faced his roomate. His eyes were half-closed. Maybe the darkness of the night was favourable to confidences, but Heero felt somewhat brave. He used his softest voice possible, in case he was sleeping.
-Duo...
-Yes...?
So he wasn't sleeping. Heero had no choice, he had to say something.
-I've been wondering...
-What? You can wonder?! Said Duo, opening his eyes wider.
Heero glared at him.
-Ok ok, I'm listening.
-Hn.
-What is it? I told you: I am listening. Say something at least.
-Well, why do you... argh, never mind.
-"Why do I" what?
-Nothing, good night.
-... "Why do I" what, what? You started something, now finish it.
-It's stupid. Forget it.
-Hey Heero, I'm the expert in stupidity. Say it, I'm listening. You're starting to piss me off, man.
-...
-"Why do I" what!?!
Heero just smirk at him.
-Why are you smirking?
-You should sleep, baka. Maybe it'll help your brain.
-I'll sleep when you tell me what it is.
-I said forget it.
-Oh, come on! You poked my curiosity. Tell me!!
Duo sat up on his bed and looked at him with the eyes of a child begging for a story. Charming yet pitiful, but altogether cute. Heero sat up too, trying not to laugh at his expression.
-Stop with those eyes.
-Then tell me.
-...ok. Duo, why do you... hmf... why do you... smile?
-Why wouldn't I?
-I mean, you're the one person I know that has the most reasons to scream, damn the whole world, go on a killing spree... and you keep on smiling... why?
Upon hearing that, a big smile lighted Duo's face. He found kind of funny the fact that Heero asked his computer about his past, instead of him.
-You searched my personal history?
-Kinda...
-Smiling makes people happy, said Duo gaining back his seriousness.
-I don't think it's that simple.
-You're right. Well, let's say... You know, you're not the only one who doesn't like to get in touch with people. Smiling is a good shield, you know like "hi, how are you? *smack smack* see ya next time!".
-So you're playing the happy fool?
-No, I'm really happy. Now good night.
-... good night.
Duo laid back down to sleep, once more facing the wall. He was obviously done with this conversation. Heero wasn't really sure his question had been answered, but he never did quite understand him, so why start now? At least now he had his proof that even though Duo acted like an enthousiastic fool, a happy moron and an energy bomb, he was as traumatized from the war as the rest of them. Maybe feeling like one of those war victims were alright once in a while...?
