Author's Note: This occurs during F.Z.Z.T., and, like several other people have undoubtedly done before, it encompasses the emotions and thoughts of Jemma Simmons. I've used this as a roleplay application para before, and since I do not believe I need it anymore, I decided I would post it here. Enjoy!
Adrenaline was a biochemical reaction that had fascinated Jemma Simmons since she was a young girl, and though she understood it well in a theoretical situation, she was rather surprised at the sensation currently racing through her veins. She had always associated a pleasant thrill with the term, not a sinking sensation caused by the fact that she was literally racing against time to save her own life. Yet here she was, back pressed against the glass with her best friend on the other side, and epinephrine pulsing further through her with every beat of her heart. Did her heart know that each beat may be its last? That each second increased the chances of an electric shock stopping it?
The only thing that could potentially save her life was an antiserum of her own invention, and the first two mice suspended in air reflected upon the likely failure in her future. The pressure upon her was nearly tangible, and her constricting lungs made it even more difficult to think clearly. Harsh reality ensnared Jemma; it was utterly hopeless. An antiserum like the one they were attempting to create simply defied all the laws of biology that Jemma had spent so much time studying because the antibodies were not strong enough to defeat the Chitauri virus. The human genetic material was too susceptible to the alien disease. There was no natural immunity for something from beyond earth, and there wasn't enough time to research the results to effectively create an antiserum that could combat the vicious nature of the virus.
So she began to make promises to herself that she never intended to keep, unrealistic hopes that she never would have the audacity to fulfill if she ever made it out of the situation. Yet she continued to make them anyway. She would call her mother and father more often, devote more time to research of her own, make sure Fitz knew how much he meant to her. All she wanted to do is live. Even if death was inescapable, Jemma didn't want to go now, not when she still had so many things left to do and say. However, what she wanted and what her team needed were two different options. The adrenaline continued to encourage her body to fight for her survival, but her mind no longer agreed, especially if the continuation of her life endangered her extended family on the Bus. They were her priority, and she was willing to die to protect them if that was what was demanded of her. As the third mouse hovered in the air, she realized her fate was inevitable, and all there was left was to allow the ocean consume her, to return her borrowed energy to the giver of all life.
She then offered herself up to the universal force of gravity, tumbling through thousands of feet of air to shield those she loved.
