Mako waved good bye to Korra and we both started back towards the arena.

He was quiet. His face was blank. That cool under fire style that the crowd praised him for was now being used on me.

I hated it. The waiting that is. Mako would wait until we got home and then explode. I never questioned why Mako was born a fire bender. It fit his personality to a T.

I could see the bright lights of the Arena up ahead and my stomach clenched even more. It probably didn't help that I hadn't eaten all day but I had seen the worried looks Mako gave the budget book he had started. And now with the championship fee it was going to be even harder to scrape up the money needed to live.

Mako unlocked the back door and we both walked up the stairs in silence still.

The door at the top looked almost menacing.

He unlocked the door and I stepped inside the dim, somewhat bare apartment and stood still just within the entry way.

He shut the door.

"Are you stupid?"

I look down at the ground in shame as he circles from the door to stand in front of me.

"How many times have I told you to stay away from them?"

He whipped his hand out and pulled my chin up so I had to look him in the eyes. Those eyes. Exactly like mother's.

"Are you just going to ignore me? Kami Bolin! Don't you understand that stupid stunts like this are going to get you killed?"

I broke.

"Of course I know MAKO! I lived on the streets too ya know! And I never asked you to take care of me! I'm not 6 anymore! You want to know something? I haven't eaten in about three days and have been working about three shifts in that dirty, disgusting diner down by the ports to try and make a little extra cash! I'm trying to help! I'm trying to not be a burden anymore! I'm the reason that you didn't get to have a home or a n-nice job because you couldn't leave me to go and find any of that! So just shut up Mako!"

His jaw tightened and he raised his hand. My eyes went wide and a few tears that had been building up streamed down my cheek, was he going to hit me?

I closed my eyes as his hand came down and froze as I felt it go behind me. Mako pulled me into him for a hug.

More tears came now.

"Bo. I don't ever want to hear those words again. You are not a burden. You are my little brother. The only family I have left. I don't know what I would do if something happened to you."

We stood there. And for the first time in a long time. I felt peace.
