I don't own CSI.

Spoilers for season 12 episode "Genetic Disorder."

I love writing for Brass, and I love writing for Greg...ta-da! Here's a new fic! I loved the interaction between Brass and Greg in the episode "Genetic Disorder," so I got to thinking...why not a friendship piece between the two? So, here's the story. Please read and review!

Jim Brass and Greg Sanders sat at the table in interrogation as Patrick O'Toole was led away. After the body of the geneologist he killed was found in the bedroom of Doc Robbins house by his wife, they wanted to believe that Doc's wife was innocent.

Greg and Jim shared a sigh. "So Judy's innocent," Jim said.

Looking at the detective next to him, Greg said, "Yeah, I think D.B.'s going to tell Doc." Watching as Jim sighed, Greg asked, "Mind if I ask why you were so..."

Jim looked back at Greg. "So gung-ho?"

Nodding, Greg said, "Yeah."

Sighing heavily, Jim said, "The Robbins' are good people. The thought of Judy..."

Greg understood. "So you thought she did it?"

Jim nodded. "I didn't want to, believe it or not. I guess...Catherine was right. Years ago, during a case she said it takes a bad marriage to tell a good one."

Greg stared at the detective he had come to know and always respected. He had known Jim had had a bad marriage that he never talked about, and Greg never pushed...until now. "So you went after Judy because of your ex?"

Jim smiled sadly. "I was so stupid then...I thought a bad marriage was better than no marriage. But I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions."

Greg nodded. "I'm sorry about that. But really, I know you were just doing your job. We all were."

Jim looked at the young CSI in front of him and wondered when Greg grew up. He remembered him as a lab tech with crazy hair and a sense of humor in the lab, then as a level one CSI who worked hard to prove himself as a capable criminalist. He remembered when he'd gotten beaten up just trying to save another man's life and all the emotional pain he endured after that. And now, here Greg was, a CSI level three, one of the best CSIs he'd ever worked with.

"You know, Greg, I appreciate that." Noting the young man's eyes narrowed in confusion, he said, "That you haven't judged me based on what happened with this case."

Greg smiled softly. "I was just doing my job. And I had just hoped Judy was innocent too, and she is. You were right, they are good people." Jim nodded. Greg added, "Besides, I'm the CSI and you're the cop...you're allowed to get ahead of the evidence."

That brought a small laugh to the detective. "I'm going to go talk to Doc Robbins, maybe see Judy later."

Greg nodded. "That's a good idea."

Jim smiled softly at Greg. "When did you get to be such a great CSI?"

Greg smiled. "I guess I always have been. Like you, I was just doing my job."

The two shared a smile as Jim got up to go find Doc Robbins and apologize. Greg got up to file the paperwork on the case. He may not have agreed with Brass' actions on the case, but he always respected him. He was happy he could bring some closure to Doc and Judy, and hoped that Brass would find a little happiness in his life as well.

The End.
