Effie sits there staring at the TV with Haymitch in shock. She wonders why she's shocked, after all she knew this was going to happen. Haymitch sits there with an expression that's almost unreadable except for the small hint of stress. Before she knows it he's up on his feet; not long after the Escort stands too. She stands there for what seems to be minutes before Haymitch speaks.
"Listen Effs, we don't have much time."
"Haymitch what's going to happen to you?"
"I don't want you worrying about me alright?" He doesn't even wait for a response before he continues. "They're going to come for you. I don't know when, but they will eventually. I need you to be strong…I know you have it in you. I always have. You hear me?"
Effie just nods with his last few sentences, there are so many things running through her head. He continues knowing their time is limited.
"I didn't think I'd ever say this, but no matter how annoying you were all these years…I-I love you, Effie."
She stares at him with renewed shock. How could it be that of all the men in Panem; it's none other than Haymitch Abernathy standing in front of her saying this? She finally speaks up saying the words she'd never thought she would ever say.
"I love you too." She replies shakily.
Haymitch looks back at the now blank TV screen for a minute, almost as if he's trying to figure out his next response. He turns back to Effie and does something completely unexpected. Before she knows it Haymitch looks at her for a few seconds with what seems to be regret, not for his next action, but for the fact that he's going to be leaving her behind in mere minutes.
With that thought in mind, he kisses her softly, with just enough passion to show her that he's truly sorry about leaving, and how much he really does love her. Almost too soon he breaks the kiss to look at her again.
"Remember that for me okay? I have to go now, but…just do me a favor and…stay alive."
He picks up her hand and kisses it before letting go and walking to the door leading to the roof. With one last look he turns the door knob, but before he can even open the door Peacekeepers barge in. Three of them to be exact. Two of them grab Effie by the arms and one looks over the room to make sure no one else is there. He doesn't see Haymitch. He's snapped back to reality when he hears Effie scream his name.
"Haymitch! Please help me! Don't let them take me! Haymitch!"
Then she starts sobbing uncontrollably, instantly one of the Peacekeepers gets annoyed and hits her with such a force that would have surely knocked her to the ground if it weren't for the other Peacekeepers holding onto her arms to keep her from escaping. She lets out a strangled cry from the hit. Before she or Haymitch could do anything more the Peacekeepers practically drag her wailing body out the door. The door closes with a loud slam.
He stands there alone.
"I'm so sorry sweetheart." He chokes out with a single tear sliding down his face.
He realizes there's nothing he can do now except hope, so he grabs the door handle and heads up the stairs to the roof with the events that happened moments ago playing through his head.
He doesn't talk to anyone the whole hovercraft ride to District Thirteen. The only thing going through his mind now is: 'Effie Trinket I am so sorry, but you will come out of all this alive.'
