When We Were Kits

When We Were Kits

Demeter's POV

I lay in my den, I sighed. Painful memories flooded my brain as I thought about her last mate, when we were kittens.

"C'mon Deme!" the Tom cried, his blue eyes glistening.

"What is it Mac?" asked a tiny Demeter,

"I have a secret"

"What is it?" Demeter asked curiously, Macavity lent over to the tiny tabby and playfully tapped her sholder.

"Tag!" and with that last note he scampered off with little Deme following.

The two kits played this game over and over until they both were exhausted and fell to the ground.

"Mac?"

"Yeah"

"We'll always be friends right?"

"Of course Deme, for ever and ever."

I came back to earth those word stabbed my heart like a blade. I curled up into a ball and started to sob uncontrollably.

It was fine when we were kits.

Macavity's POV

I sat in my quarters as my mind raced back to the time when we was younger.

"Mac, do you love me?"

"Dem, I – I do."

She smiled brightly at him and then pulled him into a hug,

"W- will you be my mate at the next jellicle ball then?"

"Deme that would be a dream come true"

She smiled bolder and brighter now

"I love you Mac"

"I love you to Dem."

I felt like I had been stabbed in my chest a thousand times as the words echoed through my head. I bent down and cried, I hadn't cried since I was a jellicle and my Mother left it was so hard now.

It was fine when we were kits.
