Chapter 1: Beginning

1989: Wilton Knight stared at the Firebird Trans-Am that his team had just finished building, the first car with artificial intelligence. Wilton asked the young man, Kenneth Franklin to come into the warehouse. Ken was 40, newly married and was a former CIA agent who had not gotten much action due to his not going to the Vietnam war in the the 60's or '70's. He was the Foundation for Law And Government's first agent in a grand experiment pairing Ken with the prototype. His business partner Lionel Luthor had helped fund the building of the vehicle, which Wilton had titled, the Knight Automated Roving Robot. He smiled at his sister's husband Harold Finch, who was consulting on this project. He had contributed circuitry for the prototype.

"What do you think, Harry?" Wilton asked him. "I'd love to see him in action, Will," Harold said. He smiled at the female technician who had been caught in the vehicle with her boyfriend the night before.

"Dr. Curtis, what are you doing here," he asked her. The red head who was in reality Tess Mercer, smiled at him. She had been sent back in time to make sure KARR was built, but she had miss-programmed the vehicle during a wild night when she had snuck her boyfriend into the grounds. She had taken the name of a cybernetic technician who was currently in Australia finishing her doctorate in Artificial intelligence and robotics.

"I need to see this through," Tess said. Charles Graiman, Wilton's best friend walked in. He was the silent partner behind Knight Industries growth the last few years.

"Let her stay," he urged. Wilton and Harold nodded.

"Ken, meet your new partner, the Knight Automated Roving Robot," Charles said as Lionel Luthor walked in. The multi-millionaire was from Kansas and he funded the KARR project for the last few years. Lionel smiled at Ken.

"A car?" Ken replied with surprise.

"A car that the military was so recently interested in, Mr. Franklin," Wilton said. They then heard the vehicle speak, its voice metallic and devoid of emotion.

"Not just a car. I am the Knight Automated Roving Robot, or KARR if you prefer," the vehicle said. Lionel smiled. He had paid Elizabeth Knight a million dollars for the stolen Kryptonian technology back in 1980 that he was still trying to unlock, but the Kryptonian AI had been easy to break into and had been integrated into KARR. In walked Devon Miles, Executive Director of the Foundation for Law And Government, a private government agency, that the Federal Government wanted to incorporate into the FBI, but Wilton had denied the government that opportunity as he felt the Federal Government had too much red tape.

"This car is incredible," Ken said as he saw the vehicle's red scanner track left to right and back again. Ken stared as the driver's side door opened on its own and he climbed in. He felt the seats. The cloth seats had been replaced with Corinthian Leather. Ken stared at the digital dash with its electronic displays and the two monitor screens which the sensors were showing on the screens. Wilton smiled in wonder as the Ex-CIA operative stared at the almost airplane looking steering wheel and all the displays.

"This car is indestructible, so you won't have to worry about injury to yourself, Mr. Franklin," Devon said. The vehicle then activated Police frequency which it had been monitoring. "Robbery happening at 43rd and Hammerly," said a female voice that came over the car's internal stereo speakers. The car had been outfitted with the new Dolby Surround Sound speakers which would envelope the driver in whatever he was listening to or doing while in the car. Wilton smiled at the car's preparedness.

"Well, Ken, it looks like you have your first mission," Wilton said. Ken pressed on the accelerator and the vehicle was off headed toward its first mission. Wilton looked at Devon as Lionel left.

"Any news on Mr. Long?" He asked Devon. Devon smiled. "Mr. Long was just deployed to my native England and from there will be deployed to Russia for negotiations in regards to how some of our secret service men's names ended up in Russian hands," Devon said.

"Keep an eye on him anyway, just in case," Wilton advised. Devon frowned at his longtime friend. "Just in case of what?" Devon asked.

"You never know. You remember what happened to my great-grandfather Vladimir Knight, don't you?" Wilton said. The mention got Devon nervous, as he had read about the revolutionary back in the day.

"Will do, Wil," Devon said...
