We Are But Friends

A lie was told

And wanting it to be true

I accepted it whole.

Though we were one

And it seemed happiness was there

I had a feeling I could not share.

Though for a time I did what I could,

You were distant and cold and

I should have known then

To another were you sold.

I refused to see the signs

And instead sought advice

On how to get you to be more kind.

Then after my last failed attempt

To show you my affection,

I finally admitted

To be we were not meant.

And before I could muster my strength

To end the affair,

You came to me and confessed

That though for me did you care

We are but friends

And that bond you dare not tear.

So we talked

And decided to call it quits

But the flame of our friendship

Would always be lit.
