Inui was bad at subtle.
Kaidoh had seen the pink streamers sitting on the dresser, haphazardly hidden by a shirt. He had seen the package of blue balloons half-stuffed into the bedside table drawer. There was pastel wrapping paper and ribbon in the trunk of their car, a teddy bear on the shelf in the hall closet, and a bag of cake-making supplies in the cupboard.
So when he found all of his friends in their living room after work, shouting "Surprise!" he wasn't very surprised.
"You know," he said to Inui after everyone had left, "I… kind of knew about the baby shower."
"I know." Inui smiled him. "I know how much you hate surprises, so I thought it would be good to leave you a few hints."
